Question Converting 2001 Cup to '02-'05 Spec - Wiring and ECU

In the not too distant future, I will need to rebuild my engine (or have it done). Am curious about a few things, and would appreciate any input you guys with 996 Cups might have.....

1. Can someone describe the benefits/advantages of upgrading to the Bosch ECU? Is it even possible?

2. If I WAS able to upgrade from the 2001 Porsche Motronic ECU (996-618-610-92) to the Bosch MS3.1 ECU (996-618-608-92), what other changes are necessary? Obviously, will need to acquire the Bosch ECU (I saw the Orbit one listed for sale here), but I assume I will need at least the main cabin wiring harness (swap FROM 996-612-101-92 TO 996-612-611-92) AND possibly the harness leading from the ECU back to the motorsport plugs for the engine harness (FROM 996-612-853-90 TO 996-612-801-96). Are the 611-92 and 853-90 harnesses even available any longer? Any shot of acquiring one from a wrecked late 996 Cup? Anyone have any idea as to cost?

3. From the part numbers in the 2001 and 2005 Cup PET catalogs, the engine harness has a different part number too. Same questions as #2 above regarding availability and pricing.

4. If the Bosch upgrade is not feasible, either physically or economically, can the Motronic ECU be tuned at all?

Thanks in advance to all for any information, suggestions or recommendations.

Toby

Did you notice that Rodger at Orbit has an ECU for sale? Actually, you should talk with him, I'm sure he's done it all.

Jerry,

Yes, I did see that Rodger has one for sale. And I would wager you are correct that they have likely undertaken this transplant. I'll give him a ring. Was hoping that Cory F. might chime in as well as I would bet that he and Gordon have done these upgrades in the past (long ago history for those guys I'm sure!).

Got an MXL2 laying around yet?

Default 3.1 ECU Swap Cup Cars

Hey Toby,

I am getting ready to start the 2005 ECU conversion for my 01 996 GT3 Cup Car.

Recently, I smoked the stock ECU, Fortunately, PMNA had the unit readily available for $2600.

I just purchased a wrecked, low hour, 2005 GT3 Cup and am getting ready to do the wiring harness swap to accommodation the 3.1 Bosch ECU.

Have you done yours yet? Just purchased 2-996 cup engines and am going to reman each of them. DO you think there is a market for an "exchange" program for the cup engines. I own the Engine Lab in Tampa, (Rokket Racing) so all of the appropriate tools and machining is readily available at my disposal.

Cheers!

If it helps, Porsche Motorsport was (still is?) doing an update to 2001 ECU's. My 2001 Cup has a sticker from Porsche Motorsport on the ECU dated 3/10/2004 stating that the limiter is set at 8,000 RPM, map is: CUPSTK35.hex, ECU code is: 181190 and that: "Use for stock Cup engines only, Use 100 Octane minimum". Do not know if that helps you or adds confusion. Good luck.
