IMHO They are not as cheap as they look. You could get lucky but I would not expect it and in short order you will easily have north of 70k in any car if it is not too bad.

There is a lot of activity on these cars. Everyone wants to make a deal for a bunch of them at once. A few offers on the table, but these guys are really fixed on their price.

fstockcarrera. Very true. And very true with any cup you might buy. Especially if you start just south of that number like I did.

One was just out at VIR having a great time last weekend with nothing more than a nut and bolt, alignment, oil change, and tires.

I saw those. I was tempted to go grab one that was clean and straight and just park it in the corner for the next half a dozen years. I think the challenge would be personally inspecting the vehicle and making sure it was straight. I personally wouldn't be that concerned about the mechanicals. I would fully refurbish (engine, brakes, suspension and gearbox) anything like that before putting it back on track.

I looked at the three that came up here to Cleveland and I have to say they were pretty nice cars, seemed to be all there and sounded terrific.

I just had my old 996 cup rebuilt by PMNA, it was $35,000.
Add a dash/ video-$10,000
Seat, cool suit, little paint here and there, new windshield, you will be lucky to be there at $70,000 IF you don't have to touch the gearbox.

Be very careful

Yea but for the money you could just shade tree it. Not to start a whole different conversation but if you weren't all bent on having a sealed PMNA motor and box it really isn't much different that a GT3 letter car...

Yes but he's got an unquestionable motor and yours may be as good. It's just a different level of maitainence, I wish I could afford.

Forget owning Surfbum's car. (which I agree with) I wish I could afford to spend $10k on a dash and video. I feel like I am the big man when I can spend $2500 on such things.

There's no comparison between the two, Dave demands the beat and his cars are beautiful and mechanically fastidious...

You do need to know what your getting into, if you want to keep a cup in factory trim you could easily buy one of these at $45 and put another $50 in it. Better to start with a well documented car.

All I'm saying is if you can get a complete running cup for mid $40, you have the mechanical ability and don't care about keeping it in cup spec these could be a real fun cars.

It consider one ILO the spec box, but keep the Becker cup in spec and romp on one of these...

Hey dont get me wrong, my post is only if you want a spec car.
Now if you were doing a hot rod, these would be an excellent car, lots of cheater 3.8's out there. Or better yet, use Glen's advise, "buy car, drive car", you just might get 50-100 hours out of these motors.
You can always run without data and video, i just think its the best way to assist your progress (next to a driving coach).

I was merely trying to make sure anyone goes into one of these with their eyes wide open if they want to build a spec car.

By the way, Jim you going to the Festival of Speed? PCA/POC/Pirelli all running together if you double stint there are like 7 total races you could run if you were ironman!!!!

Dave,

No you're right on the mark for anyone expecting a pristine cup in spec trim. I'd love to do FOS, I haven't gotten in a lap all year, business is crazy, overseas is just cranking up. I may be following you having Doug do arrive/drive, no time to tinker anymore...

I'm hotrodding the boxster to an ST3 car (nobody to run with in D or spec). If I sold it I'd buy one of these cups and beat it...
