Cup axles...or street car axles
I'm wondering why Porsche decided to put about as many part numbers on their rear axles as there are different colors of Toyota's ( each model year they can have up to 8 different shades of blue, red, etc. ) in a production year??
I have a 90 on one side and a 91 on the other , yet a 23 out of a turbo will work, or a 16 out of a GT3 street car also "may" be perfect. I've been told NOT to bother using cup "blue" axles, they can also break just as easy as a $500 black 996 330 024 13 !
Anyone have a favorite P/N ? I'm leaning on a 23, but may just use a 13 !
Thanks

Advantage to cup axles (blue) are weight, they are lighter so you have less drive train loss.
Next step would be the baller pankle titanium axles (yellow) that take lightness and stiffness to the next level, but are north of $15k last i checked.
I have also seen pankle axles lighted further with machining for those last few tenths with pro drivers

Resurrecting an old thread to secure some additional data on axles/halfshafts for 996 Cups......
What type of Krytox grease should be used on Cup axles and where can one buy this stuff for "reasonable" prices (it *IS* a Cup after all!)?
Also, so far I've heard of "Black", "Blue" and "Yellow" axles for these cars. Are there others out there for the buying?? Which one is recommended?
2001 Cup - since the right axle failed just inside the stub axle during the COTA Enduro at T12 exit, I am shopping for new axles so I *KNOW* what I actually have on the car.
Thanks everybody.

I never could get a definitive answer on which Krytox to use for axles...Also, it can be toxic and make you pretty sick if it gets hot and releases gases I hear....I have used NEO Synthetic and never had a problem on any axle/CV joint. But then again I am not a pro and not doing 24 hour races!

if you just use blk axle and the "regular" grease thats in it.
how many hours will it last?
i figured it the hours are reasonble, then just keep changing the black axle often?
just thinking out loud, newbie in this.

We use the Metalore Axles ( Similar to the Pankel but not quite as expensive ) If you are doing lots of enduros they pay for themselves quickly...Because they last like 3 times longer than blue axles their $$/hr ratio makes them the cheapest option... if you are doing sprint racing just use the black street car axles and change them every 40 hrs or so and you wont have a problem, we never repack them, just run them to 40, then put in new ones... at $1000 for a pair of them its only $25 / hr... Rarely ever have CV problems, the Axles themselves are the weak links!

Just broke a blue axle at Sebring this weekend. Many thanks to Rodger at Orbit Racing for replacing them with a set of used axles he had in his trailer. He told me that black turbo axles were fine and DON'T change the grease out. I've sent him an email to confirm but he seemed emphatic that the stock grease did not need to be changed.
So, where's the best place to buy stock axles from?
