Default 996 cup Sachs front drop link bracket

Does anyone know if the front drop link support brackets for the Sachs adjustables on the 996 cup should be threaded or smooth inside.
The rears thread onto the shock body and lock in place but I've a pair of what I thought were front brackets but with them being threaded there's no way (I can see) to get them down to the bottom of the shock body.
They foul on the gas canister and support while they are still half way up the shock thread.

I'm wondering if they should just be smooth inside so they just slip down and are locked with rings or whether I'm missing something embarrassingly obvious.
