I've had the same experience with 4 sets of R6's in the past couple of years on a 996 GT3. Lots of talk about this problem in the 996GT3 forum (and possibly others). Apparently due to starting with too low a pressure coupled with low ambient temperatures. Most, but not all, of my problems fit that theory, but I'm not entirely convinced.........

These tires aren't R6s. They are the Hoosier cups made specifically for the GT3 Cup cars. My mechanic advised me not to run the Hoosiers. He told me it has to do with too much camber in the rear with a rear engine car. It puts too much stress on the inside sidewall of the tire. He told me he has guys blow them out in 3 laps.

285/30 does not have enough load capacity for a heavy 993 I believe.

I have had this happen on both warm and cold days so I don’t think it is temperature related.

Max load is listed at 1168 lbs. Seems like that should be fine for a 993.

Bob,
Congrats on the new C3 Cup. Is it easier/harder to drive than a C1 cup? More fun/less fun? I assume the suspension is a lot stiffer... and better.

I went through this EXACT issue several times when I first set up my 996 with Moton triples and the Hoosier slicks (not R6's).

Hoosier kept telling me the tires weren't inflated properly after I sent one back that separated. I reduced the rear negative camber and no more issues! The problem is too much camber!

Switch to -2.5' rear camber.

Much easier to drive. Think power steering, with proper suspension. The 64 cup is way too soft. The cable shift linkage of a 6cup is a little more vague as is the feedback through the steering. The cockpit sounds of the trans are intoxicating. Very predictable when it steps out and easy to control. But all I've drive these past 18 years is a 911. Boxster and Cayman drivers may be unnerved. I"m going to stick with the Michelins but may try a set of Dunlops. I loved those tires. Anyone try Dunlops on a 6cup.

I had a sidewall separation, somewhat longer than yours, on a Hoosier slick, RF, running my 03 cup at a DE at Mid Ohio last year. Occurred on 8th hc. Camber -4 deg 15 min. We sent the slick back to Hoosier, and to their credit they replaced it no charge. So, I presume they concluded this was a manufacturing defect.

FYI, at 16 or 17 heat cycles I experience a substantial decrease in traction.
