Also do you think that they may have made other mods?

My guess:
Since he was only driving on pavement its most likely a slick tire.
I know 2 teams that run 997 cups in a rally situation and when its tarmac and dirt/loose gravel, they use a rain slick tire or a intermediate slick tire... but they dont last more than 1 run.

Avon makes a most excellent selection of hill climb slicks http://www.avonracing.com/radial_page.aspx. I have run the A15 compound on a Boxster AX car and with a MAX operating temperature of ~110, they are hard to beet on a cold day in single run format.

Thanks Guys, I really appreciate your help.
I will do some research on the Avons - 15's sounds wickedly soft!!

The A15 compound has about the same consistency as bubble gum to the touch, they are pretty nuts. The A50 compound may be more suitable for a hill climb in a Cup though unless the weather is in the 50s, overcast, and/or damp as the A15s required water to keep them cool between runs on an overcast high 60 degree day on a 2000lb, 200hp car with a 47 second course on asphalt running 11" wide tires square. Concrete does not pick up radiant heat quite as well so if you are running on that, it will be different but then again what I ran were bias-ply as they build heat faster and don't require the camber so... Avon should be able to tell you what the other Cups are running for hill climbs and they seem to be pretty easy to work with. I didn't deal with them directly as I am just the co-driver in the Boxster but last year when our USA supplier ordered the wrong size on accident, Avon was able to overnight a set of tires from England to the event which was quite nice.
