997.1 Drive Shafts: Current Recommendations
A friend of mine snapped the threaded/splined-end of his left rear driveshaft on his 2006 997.1 Cup car this week exiting Turn 7 at the Glen. Not a good experience. I have a similar (2007) Cup and have begun looking at replacing mine as well as his. It there are current preference out there these days on replacements? Looking at the 2007 Turbo driveshafts, the Demonspeed drive shafts, etc. Any experiences are appreciated.

I had the same thing happen to me last year at VIR entering the front straightaway, scary but thankfully not too bad all things considered.
After a bunch of research I decided to go with the Demonspeed axles.

I’ve found turbo axles for $850 each from Porsche. Ed’s (Demonspeed) are $3200 a pair. On the website Ed states the shafts flex more to lessen the load on the ends. Makes sense. Not sure if the ends are stronger.

Of course this is assuming you don’t have a failure that ends up tearing up $10k (or more if you hit something or someone!) worth of your car in the process.

It is worth considering converting the early cars to run the later green/yellow axles?
Are the 997 Turbo/GT3/GT2 axles any better than the 996 Turbo axles?

Ed also states that because of the metallurgy he (or the drive shaft shop) uses the axles don’t time out, all you have to replace are the bearings. When you consider that, they pay for themselves after 2 sets of Turbo axles which shouldn’t be used more than 25 hours.

We have been supplying these axles for the 996 and 997.1 cup cars for close to 10 years now. We sell quite a number of the DSM version of the drive shaft shop axles. In that time, there have not been any snapped axles. Unlike the factory axles, both the inner and outer bearings can be serviced. The outers require a return to DSS for them to perform the service, but it is quite reasonable.

I really thought we removed that comment from the website to avoid confusion. That is between the axle shaft and the bearing, not the fit of the axle itself.
