^uhh, thought are there engine has had some action - max rpm is above 11,000 and over 10% on cylinders is I personally wouldn't be running that engine anymore.

Also for track day only - not racing, what would be the leak down you would consider acceptable?

I’ve been told 15% or not

Yes a long time ago, but at 10% leakdown and 196hrs on the motor total with that over-rev you are asking for trouble. If its a car from Europe a lot of times the ECU doesnt get reset so service records (ie. engine rebuild records) would be a must if claiming it has been rebuilt. But that is getting up there on the spectrum of over-revs that it wouldn't matter to me when it happened.

Here is the guidelines on the 3,8l (991 albeit the same motor in the 997.2 which is more susceptible to over-revs based on shifter setup) from PMNA:

Understood!

Do USA cars get the ECU totals reset? I’m in Australia and I don’t believe they get reset ever.

I’ll ask for further details on engine build time

There are two timings--the 197h number is the ECU. The 94h number is your engine.

With a 11k max I really wouldn't buy this engine even for a trackday, unless a rebuild's been priced in.

Out of curiosity are those durations cumulative or single events?

I'm waiting for the response from the engine builder ( respected USA guy ) I feel with these 997.2 there is no perfect car, you just have to take a bit of a punt and expect some costs at some stage! I'm working those expectations into the price eventually, the gearbox is 0 hours and the rest of the car seems tidy! ( I haven't seen it personally yet in the USA )

I would price in a rebuild. I am planning on a rebuild at 85-90 hours, my 996 motors were good for more hours. Typically 130 - 150 with no over-rev’s above 8450 and solid dyno readings.

I have seen a 997.2 motor with 178 hours but it was a miracle it didn’t blow up. More than half the valves had broken springs and 4of 6 cylinders had broken rings. 11,500 over-rev.

you are right about no perfect 997.2 being left but don’t be unrealistic about future costs. 996 motors go further for sure. 150 to 200 hours with good leak down and power.

Motors are just motors and are just money. If the rest of the car is good decide on your pain points for the motor rebuild.
