Default 6Cup Power Steering Issue

Just recently my power steering pump started to make a groaning noise when turning the wheel.

There’s no noise when the wheel is not actively being turned and the fluid level is correct in the reservoir.

Any ideas as to what might be going on?

The PPI on the 6 Cup I just bought revealed that the steering rack needed replacement. Not sure if that’s what’s wrong with yours but thought I’d share.

Traditionally that noise is caused by to high of a line pressure, like dead heading the pump or severe bind. Or the pump is just going bad. What u r hearing is the fluid bypassing internally.

Thanks Mark, I don't think that's my problem but a good data point regardless.

Hmmm, I'm wondering what might be causing this since I have no issues with the system working except the actual noise. No other issues with the system or heavy steering of any kind.

Doesnt mean that its not bleading pressure off. It just means its not bleading enough off to effect drivabiliity. It may get worse or just fail. Although, this is just a guess based on past experience racing off road with much heavier trucks with large tires.

Edit:
Have u checked fluid level? Maybe its low and air is getting pulled in and cavitating the pump?
