How much is 2009+ really suggested when purchasing?
My associate is looking at Caymans, he loves the idea of one and seems to appreciate the car much more than a 911 and has (with some of my guidance which is based on anecdotal evidence) been pretty much exclusively looking at 2009+ cars. He's concerned about IMS failure and doesn't really seem to care much about the difference in interior or exterior styling.
His wife plans to drive the car as well and wants automatic, also PDK > tiptronic is also a consideration but I don't think this is a deal breaker.
He has noticed a *huge* price disparity between 2008 and 2009 models so the question then becomes whether or not he really needs to put so much emphasis on buying a non-IMS car.
I'm sorry if this has been done before, I'm new here and looked through search for a moment but didn't really see the question worded like this.

^^^^^^.
Turned down 3 really nice 2007 Cayman S cars before finally getting my 2011 S. I've had 3 IMS Porsche's in the past (2, 2005's and a 2007) with no issues or cost.
But, I figured I had 3 good experiences and wasn't going to push my luck, so I revised my search to 2009+ cars. Cost more, but so does peace of mind.
Good luck to your friend, hope he gets just what he wants.

IMHO, the biggest delta in value is if you're going to track it. The 987.2 not only does away with the IMS, it also resolves the oil starvation problem and power steering fluid overheat problem. I upgraded from an '06 to an '09 because I did intend to track. But I believe my '06 would have gone 100,000 miles on the street. PDK is also a much nicer shifter but early PDK's have some history of overheating when tracked. A tracking buddy just put $2000 into his 2011 911's failing PKD.

Lots of demand for '09 and newer cars. There were fewer of them made and they are sought after for their 3.4 DFI motors. Most of the people I know that are looking for a dedicated track car are looking for the 987.2. That's what I did... Took me 2 months of looking EVERY day until one showed up that I wanted to look at.

Thanks guys.
He may track the car but I think the chances are slim and if it does happen it will likely be a one time thing. There just aren't many 2009 cars around with low mileage.

For reference, the one I found was 6 hours away, had 37,000 miles, needed a clutch, and cost me $35k.
