So, i'm looking at moving up to an enclosed trailer. I've towed with an open trailer a few times, and it's like nothing is back there. I know a few people tow enclosed 20-24' trailers with their Cayennes, but I was wondering if anyone has experience with what it's like with steel springs. I will definitely use a brake controller. Will the suspension sag even with a load distribution hitch? I'm looking at towing about 6200lbs.
PS. I've towed an enclosed trailer with an X5d, and it have more than enough power, but the suspension did sag a fair bit even with a load distribution hitch.
I have towed many many miles with my Trailex enclosed behind my Diesel Cayenne ( no air suspension but I do have PASM) and it tows like a dream. I get right at 19 MPG towing at 70mph and the Cayenne hardly knows the trailer is there. In fact had a '11 V8 gas Cayenne before and the diesel is a far better tow vehicle. Watch your tongue weight and you will have no issues.

I have a '14 CD with over 70,000 miles on it. I also tow a Trailex enclosed trailer. But in the thousands and thousands of miles I have pulled my trailer I have never gotten anything close to 19mpg. The car's trip computer and speedometer are not accurate. Best real world mpg for me at highway speeds has been in the 15's. I can't comment on steel springs as I have air suspension.
Thanks for the info guys! I'll be perfectly happy with 19mpg - that's exactly in line with what I was getting with my X5d. I guess now I gotta decide on 20' or 22' enclosed. Planning on an ATC aluminum trailer, and the weight difference between the two is negligible. Hopefully keeping the total weight to 6200-6500lbs, and the spread axle will keep the suspension sag minimal.
'13 CD with steel springs and a 24' ATC. Towed very well at ~ 7.5k total weight, although it got a little squirrelly if there was too much tongue weight. With the F80 as passenger it had to be ALL the way in the back. Minimal sag on the Cayenne. I hand calc'ed about 17.5mpg towing over 1500 miles.
FWIW my Cummins Ram 3500 tows better (duh) but gets 11mpg.
I recently traded a 2014 CD with 24k miles for another 2014 CD w 47500 miles just to get the air suspension. It is an option but way to rare in my opinion. Lots of Cayenne Ss with it and of course the GTS and TT come with it. We tow a 5700# boat but the reason I got the AS CD is for the non towing ride. The steel springs were just too stiff for us, especially after owning a V8 Touareg that had it. The steel springs will tow ok but I feel the ride suffers when not towing. I really like the difference and it was worth it to me. I also got a Platinum edition that has ACC/Pas, entry & drive, and full leather. Love it. Good luck, hope this helps.
As others have said, stay within tongue and load weights and you should be ok. Keep a more conservative driving style if you go 24' or 26' overall length.
I tow a 26' Featherlite enclosed usually at 6600-7000 lbs. I have air suspension and there is a noticeable sag at hook-up before the suspension compensates. Once level, the towing is nice; the v6 diesel is more than adequate. I have hit up to 18 mpg a few times but mostly around 15-16 mpg (measured by manual calculation not PCM) depending on grade and speed.
What mirrors do you guys use with your trailers? The old strap on style I have don't seem to fit the new Cayennes very well. Anyone have experience with Repusel mirrors? http://www.repuselmirror.com/repusel...rsche-cayenne/ I saw another thread with suggestions, but no one shared their experiences.
If you plan on towing with a Diesel Cayenne, it will do wonders with the Aerovault. No need for the extended mirrors. You'll get better mileage due to the design and it being so light weight (2300lbs). There is also no need to concern yourself with the load distribution hitch as our tongue load weight is around 300-400lbs. We also use torsion axles so there is no sag whatsoever. One opinion on the Airstream forum is that this hitch is too "abusive" on my receiver. They are recommending the Eaz-lift hitch. (As far as I know, they don't sell this hitch )

We as well are considering towing an Airstream as a base camp to then leave it behind while we explore trails. Which Airstream forum are you following?
With all of our off-road gear (weight) we would probably have to go smaller than a 23' - looking to rent first to see how practical an Airstream would be for us.
