Default 957 GTS with 165K?!

Local dealer to me has a 2009 GTS with 165K miles being sold AS IS. They are about to send it to auction but they offered it to me.

I'm going tomorrow to have a look. Have a local specialist there I'd have perform a PPI but whats the forums consensus?

Carfax shows no accident history, maintenance is spotty but could have been done privately i'm sure. Pictures of the truck show some curb damage to wheels but otherwise clean. No CEL reported but i'll plan an extensive test drive with couple key cycles to see if anything pops up.

$9K is what they're asking... KBB hows a trade in of $9k, private party value of $12k.

I feel a bit like Tyler Hoover here and its exciting.... HAHA

Thoughts?

Different dealer has a 2006 Turbo with 93K for $16K which is also tempting... may look at both tomorrow if I'm really feeling frisky.

The list of potential issues is endless.

If you are ok with wrenching either one could be worthwhile deals, provided there is no cylinder scoring.

A scan tool will be needed to flush out faults that do not set a CE light. The PPI Tech should have one but if the codes were cleared by the dealer this will be of no value.

1. Have you owned a P car or aging, high-end, foreign vehicle before?
2. Do you wrench on your own things?
3. Are you ready to drop about 2k-3k in baselining fluids and addressing deferred maintenance?

If the answer to any of these is no, you may be in for a heck of a learning experience. Read the sticky at the top of the forum and do some searching, this same question is getting asked about once a week. Most of the common problems are well understand, save cylinder scoring which is like engine roulette, and the answers to if this is a good purchase decision for you is more dependent on your situation than the vehicle's.

957 GTS is one of the best looking Cayenne's out there. Go look at it, and check the service history.
Figure you're going to have to put money in it every year you own it, then weigh your cost of ownership over spending more, and having very little maintenance (maybe).

Its that “pay more up front to (maybe) pay less in maintenance” gamble that im debating here

ive had a couple german cars that needed a bit more loving to keep happy.

I have a lift in my home garage and could probably tackle most tasks... im gonna go have a look and see.

Worst case scenario, i get a clear picture of what to look for on a “bad” GTS. Best case scenario, i get a clean, cheap GTS to drive around for a while lol

Well, then you likely have a good idea of what you are getting into, and the ability to deal with most of it.

Have you taken a good look through the "DIY" forum?
It has good info on what tasks you may face.

For any particular car, miles are usually trumped by records and condition.

A good inspection, by someone who has a good understanding of these cars is vital.

But if that comes back clean, then you may want to go for it.
It's a gamble, but any used car is.
These just tend to be a bit bigger gamble because the acquisition and repair costs are so much more than typical cars (how much would you spend for an 09 Honda with 165k on it?)

Can you accept the fact that your $9k car may cost you $5k or more if the wrong thing goes out?
Or that it becomes 'driveway decoration' if the really wrong thing breaks?

Of course, it's entirely possible that you could drive it around for a couple years and another 40k miles with basic upkeep and a few 'interesting' things here and there.

Im headed there tomorrow. Shop down the road has both lead technicians driving 957 GTSs so if its clean enough to warrant a $450 PPI, it’ll be in good hands
