Default 996 engine swap into pre-89 911?

Wondering if anyone here has done this...by the looks of them, the 996 engine is fairly inexpensive vs. doing mods on a 3.0...any thoughts?

If V8's have been put in, there has to be an inexpensive method to this "madness"

Thanks!

I would much rather build or re-build the original engine than retrofit an inferior one from a 996. Not only it will cost you a lot more than the car's worth but it will not be as reliable as your air cooled engine.

There are a lot of issues to deal with. Among them, radiators and coolant lines. Transmission incompatibility and wiring harnesses.

Please don't do this. Put a 993 eng in if you want to be cool and cocky. It will empress your friends (Porsche friends)! I didn't think you guys up there liked coolant anyway.Oh and the996 would not be cost effective. but the 993 motor would be a blast.

I know alot of people have gone the 993 route on their 911's...as for resale value, etc. I don't plan on selling this car ever, the only other models I like are the 993, but they are too modern for me...I do like the 1972 911, but only as a moded car (RS Clone), plus there is the rust issue...

You would really enjoy a 3.2 in a 72-73 car. Not all early cars have the rust issue. Keep the motronics!

Thanks guys...I have seen the light...

3.4 bad, 3.6 good...

This winter I will be doing some projects on the 911 and one was going the PMO route (not a CIS fan) but the HP to Dollars ratio isn't that good...

Buddy, the light is a Miata with a 302 V-8. Eh, Jim?

There was a road test in Road and Track a little while back with, as I recall, a Mustang V-8 stuffed into a Miata. Quite the Q-ship.

The real "light" is Rover/Buick in NA Miata. It weighs less than the 1.6 Mazda engine and doesn't destroy the incredible balance of the car, which the 5.0 tends to do.

Hey guys,I'm late getting your posts. I think the buick/ miata, would be neat. Yes I know how close the buick/rover engine is. Just for reliability lets keep rover out of this!
