Measuring WOT ignition advance
I'd like to measure the actual advance of a custom 3.2L Motronic chip and I was thinking about ways to do it. I don't get out much so feel free to tell me the accepted way for doing this.
1. I have a timing light that I can set the advance on. I suppose I could find the peak advance that way. Set it at 28deg, rev the motor to 6000rpm and see if the pulley mark gets "frozen" by the light. Try again with 30, etc.
2. The 3.2 has a TDC sensor for testing (not the reference sensor). I could trigger the scope from the TDC sensor and measure the time until #1 plug fires. I can record the speed sensor signal [RPM=function of this signal] on the other channel of the scope. The scope can "record" for short periods so I might be able to record the whole thing and then get an advance to RPM table from that.
BTW: I already have access to the chip's ignition timing tables I just don't trust what I'm seeing.
TIA,
Chris
