Default Centerlock for 996

How does one go about converting a 2002 C2 to center lock hubs? It's a pure track car. I am fed up with 20 lug nuts every single time I have to change wheels.

Best,
Ricky

Did you see this: Rennlist Discussion Forums > Water Cooled Technical Discussion Areas > 997 GT2/GT3 Forum Centerlock Hub Failure Buttonwillow 5/25/12

Might be something in the after market.

Converting to a Porsche solution, if you even can, may not be the ticket due to potential failures. So maybe you need to look in the aftermarket for a solution.

The failures are mainly due to user error. There are no aftermarket solutions I would trust on a race car. I did find Drexler Motorsport down in Australia that does a lot of LM/VLN hubs. We'll see what they say. I need a set of center locks for my E36 as well, so I may be able to kill two birds with one stone here.

The failures are mainly due to user error. I'm sure Porsche would produce something that fails and use it on their fastest street/race cars. There are no aftermarket solutions I would trust on any of my cars. I did find Drexler Motorsport down in Australia that does a lot of LM/VLN hubs. We'll see what they say. I think there is a difference in the Porsche Cup Car and GT3 RS setups, the link I mentioned was about GT3RS's. So I'd look into the Cup parts, but I'll bet they are not inexpensive!

Hmm... I haven't been able to get enough information to answer, but my (un?)educated guess would be there is a difference. Definitely a difference in price even if the parts are the same. Welcome to Porsche-ing! I really should have bought a cup car, but the price was right. I suppose I have learned my lesson for next time. I have spent probably twenty or thirty hours googling/reading forums/etc and still know nothing about what parts I need to convert to cup hubs, and here I was thinking this would be "simple." I knew Porsches would be an experience, but wow... They are great cars though. Much more satisfying to drive than my BMW.

The obvious is to change the entire upright to a 996 Cup upright complete with CL hub. Not going to be cheap but certainly do-able. You would also upgrade brakes to 6 piston while you are at it (more $$).

Not sure it is worth as you then have to buy a breaker bar, large torque wrench, a collection of new sockets, etc.

You could go all the way and install air jacks, that way you could buy a nitrogen tank, hi-press hoses, fittings, wand, cup jack cradles, etc.........:-0 When I bought my cup car I immediately spent $2-3K on tools.

My .02 worth? Spend that same money better on track support to change your wheels for you!

I wouldn't mind changing to the cup uprights. I have another 996 racer that could use the AST's I have on the silver one. You wouldn't happen to know the part numbers?

I am going to install AST air jacks, I am just waiting for an invoice. I have an F360 race car that needs CL conversion, air jacks, etc. I'm building it to GTC specs, but foregoing the sequential. The gentleman working on it has edited the F1 system so it actually works as designed to.

Honestly, I would love to say screw all the "hardcore" race parts, but I would like to get into WC next year (more so I would like to get into VLN). Track support would be great, but I will work on pit/mechanics once I figure out what cars we will be running. I will definitely run my 360, but I don't know what my other driver wants. If I had to take a guess, I would say he will wind up in a 996 gt3 cup with an rsr enduro motor.

Very clean 996 in your picture by the way. Looks sharp.

I got the quote from Drexler MS today regarding my BMW center lock. They are looking into a custom kit for my 360, and working with Germany regarding the 996. Hopefully have a better update in a couple of days time.

For the BMW the cost is $17,000 USD. Parts list as follows:

- Front wheels hubs
- Rear wheel hubs with internal splining to suit existing driveshaft arrangement
- Quick release type brake bells made to suit existing brake disc setup
- Caliper brackets made to suit customer's brake calipers
- Spring loaded safety clip wheel security system
- Wheel centre drive/locating pins
- Wheel nuts
- Wheel nut socket for use with rattle gun

I wouldn't use a rattle gun to mount CL hubs. You might cross-thread (danger) your hub. I always hand tighten the wheel nut before using the big wrench.

For track days yes, but for races requiring pit we will have to use a gun. Expensive guns. Saw a polished set running $3k a pop.

Got the quote for the Porsches. $4k per car for uprights (incl hubs) and about $4k per set of BBS wheels. Not too shabby if you ask me. Everybody makes CL sound expensive and stupid, but (surprise surprise) they really aren't.

AST is working on a quote for the air jacks for all these cars.
