Default 911 <-> 964 brake swaps

hi - I have a big red setup on the 911, I have just bought a 964....

are they interchangeable? I want the standard 964 brakes on the 911, and the reds from the 911 on the 964...

here are the reds from the 911....

No. The mounting locations are completely different. Keep in mind that the 964 suspension is completely different from the 901 chassis that preceeded it. If you can find out what the calipers were sourced from, you should be able to find the appropriate adapters and rotors.

No way, unless you give up the rear parking brake

To mate the 993RS/tt front caliper and rotor is easy, you just need the correct caliper and rotor adapters.

But

The rear 993RS/tt rotors, which have already been modified for 911 use, cannot be further modified for 964 use and there are no other appropriate stock rotors for that app either. You can get a hat and rotor setup as used at the front but no p/brake.

Your best bet is to emulate the RoW RS w/ 993 or 993RS/tt front calipers using either 928S4 rotors or the 993RS/tt rotors and appropriate adaptors and 993 rear calipers on stock(plain) or 968 M030 rear calipers(drilled), you would also want to upgrade the m/c to 23.8mm 993 version aa well.

Igoring the question of caliper color
in the back plain ole stock rotors or the M030 968 rotors if you want drilled and n/a 993 C2 rear calipers. This set up is the same as what was used on the RoW 964RS.

In the front the cheapest is to use 928S4(304x32) rotors and n/a 993 C2 calipers,

you can go to the RoW 964RS caliper and the 965 3.6T rotors(322x32) for a bit more front brake amd a lot more money

or the 993RS/tt front calipers(Big Red) and same 322x32 965 3.6t rotors as above

I would want the bigger 23.8mm 993 m/c w/ any of the above.

p/v stays stock unless the 964 had 2 piston rears oem.

so were the turbo version brakes different to standard C2???

I guess i could just look out for a full set of those?

so swapping the fronts shouldn't be too hard? i just need to find a rotor \ bracket?

Yes, there are 2 versions of 964 turbo brakes, 3.3t and 3.6t

The fronts yes, the backs no. In the back both versions of 964t used a caliper which needs a 28mm thick rotor, unfortunatelu there are no 28mm stock rotors w/ parking brake that will fit on a n/a 964. The n/a 993 caliper is the closest, it uses the stock 24mm rotor but has the 964t 30/34 pistons for better balance w/ the big front brakes.

Yes, you need either 964RS or 964t or 993tt front rotors, they are all 32x322 and caliper adapters

or

928S4 32x304 rotors and 993 front calipers and caliper adapters

and
the back as described above

and
993 m/c

thanks for your help, i know i must be irritating, its just I want the 964 as the track car, and retire the 911 to my uncle, i just dont want to waste the brakes

I'm guessing the front arms \ hubs arent interchangeable...

So I i was to buy 964RS or 964t or 993tt front rotors, i'd just need a bracket... good good - any recommendations?

You could bolt 964RS wheel carriers on, then you would just need the rotors, no caliper adapter necessary. Pretty expensive way to do it.

I have found a kit that will mean i can use the big reds on the front, and apparently the most common (cheap) upgrade is to fit the front original 964 calipers I already have off the front straight to the back...and then go for 964T discs if I want...

not ideal, but hey -

Don't know who gave you that advice but it's bad.

Point 1
The 964 front calipers can be physically moved to the back but the pistons are too big to give anything reasonable in terms of bias

Point 2
rear 964t rotors won't work on a n/a 964

As I pointed out above, 993 rears on stock or M030 968 rotors are the standard rear fitment to balance ether Big Red or 964RS fronts

I just read yesterday in Streather's book, the Brake Fluid Reservior would also need to be changed; there is not enough fluid to keep the Big Red's filled and can cause brake failure...
