Post Gate Shift kit with a 901/930

Last weekend, my friend Curt was brave enough to let me experiment with a 915 shifter conversion on his 901 trans. setup ('70 911S). Installed with the Gate Shift kit (adv. plug), it seems to work well enough to say (perhaps prematurely), there is now another shifter alternative for those using a 901 transaxle. I'm asking him to try it for a couple of weeks just to be sure.

There's more. We're also going to try the shifter from my car (w/915). That one has the factory short shifter in it. Seems like it should work for 930 shifters as well. Stay tuned.

Hello:
I just put a 915 short gear transmission in my '70 911 T. I just put a killer 2.9liter motor in my car, went w. a 915 w GT LSD to handle the add'l power and torque of the motor. The transmission is a big improvement over my original 901, but It sure would be nice to have the shifter you discussed in your post. Is this a Wevo product? I'm very interested in your results when you put it on your 915. Please keep us informed on your progress and what ever your findings are. Is that little red thing a reverse lock out?
Good Luck,
Jim Florance

Hi Jim,
The Gate Shift kit has been on the market for almost a year, so it's a working product. It was originally designed as a retrofit for the 915 shift housing as it applies a needed spring tension to the 1st/2nd shift plane, much like what the factory provides for 5th/Rev. It works on the same principle as the other company's product, but this one is manuf. by my company, has some additional features, and costs about half of theirs. The little red thing on the side is the anodized tension plate, part of the kit.

A recent minor modification allows the 915 shifter (along with the Gate Shift kit) to control the 901 gearbox.

So as not to confuse, the pic in the first post shows the 915 shift housing (and Gate Shift kit) in a car with a 901 gearbox. The website info is still based on the 915 but will update soon.

The short answer: it will work on your car.

Just to follow up on the installation on the 911S w/901 - the test period proved successful with both factory and factory short shift versions installed. Did some laps at speed on the local racetrack a few weeks ago. The conclusion was a thumbs up. That's good.

Thus, the Gate Shift kit is now a fully-tested upgrade path for 901 gearboxes. You can replace your factory 901 shift housing with a 915 shift housing, aided by the Gate Shift kit and an optional, but recommended short shift kit (factory or aftermarket). The same benefits experienced by 915 owners are now available to those with a 901 gearbox.

There's additional product information on the website. If you'd like more information, please contact me. Thanks for the commercial timeout.

Regards,
Sherwood
