Cone Filter vs open top air box
#3
Well...I'll offer an informed "opinion" ..
- the standard box has a coned inlet ( although square-ish)inside. Some people modify the outer cover to remove all the excess except the ring that holds the filter on. This is what I have on my 85 Carrera. Gives good maintenance access...and unsure of the power increase, if any.
- as for the cone..some simply flange-up to the metering box ( flapper-style barn door inside), and there is no gentle curvature like an intake trumpet where it attaches ( and like the stock box still has). These flat-flange designs, it would seem, might actually cost you some power. Most cones also are not supported correctly ( need more bracing) , and most don't have the nipple that connects the oil fill vent line...something you will need.
