2.7L Bent Valve - Upgrade Options
A friend of mine miss-shifted my '77 911 during an autocross this weekend, and now my engine is pretty much toast. Here's my compression test results:
1 145
2 135
3 130
4 125
5 120
6 0 (!)
I'm trying to weigh my options for replacing my engine.
Details of the car:
1977 911s Targa widebody
The car is in fair condition (needs paint and interior freshening)
Never hit.
High quality widebody conversion with factory tail and spoiler.
rebuilt trans
new tires
new steering rack & tie rods
new shocks
rebuilt calipers
carrera cooler, 11-blade fan, updated heater ducts
rebuilt top
SSIs & Monty Muffler (75mm, dual in/dual out)
new alternator
non-catalyst car
value with good engine: ?
value with core engine: ?
Option 1: dump car/part out, take the money and run
revenue: $5k? (dreaming)
pro: path of least resistance
con: won't generate a lot of cash
con: I'll be 911-less, have to start car search over
Option 2: rebuild current 2.7L engine
Cost: - $6k?
pro: path of 2nd least resistance
con: still stuck with a 2.7
Option 3: install used 2.7
cost: 4k?
pro: less effort
con: used engine is a big unknown
con: still stuck with a 2.7
Option 4: 3.2L conversion?
cost: 8k?
pro: cheaper than 3.6
con: not many low-mileage 3.2s left
con: conversion costs about the same?
Option 5: 3.6L conversion: (via Dr Steve Timmins)
cost: ~$13,000
breakdown:
engine & kit: 9000
B&B exhaust: 2200
clutch: 600
local installation, shipping, etc 1200?
pro: lots of power & I can stop whining
pro: can't touch a 3.6L car for that much money
con: price
con: cost of engine exceeds value of base car
con: need to upgrade brakes!
con: smog issues?
con: will have to eat beans and weanies for a few months to replenish piggy-bank.

I would do the 3.6 motronic. The work is only a little more involve than the 3.2, the pool of donor engines is newer, the results are more satisfying. When I looked into the swap in '94 good used 3.2's were already getting hard to find(you may be in the same boat with the 3.6, the swap with motors up to 95 is not bad, things get trickier after that). The good Doctors kit appears to be very complete and well done, I used Patrick's which was not(that's the problem with being an early adopter). Do not skimp on the exhaust B&B 1.75" headers are great(their heat is not, however). A spoiler mount cooler(B&B again recommended) should be used. Brakes etc can be added as time and budget permit.
