Default Falken tires

I went out to Willow Springs (S.O.W) with Redline Track Events and a lot of the boy racers there were running Falken tires and had good things to say about them. They're sold at Big O tire stores and cost less than half of the Pilots I've been using.

Anyone have info/feedback on these tires?

Of course they are gonna say good thing as they have never driven with pilots to compare. I never had used them, but have used other lower price tires like Nitto. From my experience that lower price tire are as good as the major brands on the street. You might notice a little comfort difference between the cheap and the majors, but its small. The same can be said about the handling. When its really gonna make a difference is at the track. The majors do have a sharper turn in and better grip. The way I see it if your a casual driver the cheaper tires like Falken, Nitto, Toyo are fine. if your a guy who wants the most grip at any cost the major brands will provide that, but at substantial cost. FWIW one of the best comprimise of quality, grip, price is the Bridgestone S03.

The difference between normal street tires like the Falkens and really grippy tires like the Hoosiers, Kumho and Yokohama A032Rs are like 6-10 seconds/lap on the Streets course. That's the entire length of the front straightaway....

The guys I run with have found that the tires offered by Falken, Kumho and others are every bit as fast, or faster, then the big names - when comparing street tires. We are not talking about DOT R compund tires here but rather high performance street rubber for the track. Tires like the Kumho Ecsta MX and the Falken Azenis are made with silica compounds that are very grippy and have a decent wear (considering their grip levels). I personally run the MXs on my C4 for autox and track and have found them preferable to several different Potenza's available.

hi

well just put on a set of Falken FK451 and so far don't notice any difference from the Goodyear F1 that were on before apart from the obvious i still have some money in my pocket

GOODYEAR F1 x 4 tyres £440

FALKEN FK 451 x 4 tyres £320

so a saving of £120

note prices here in the UK

I believe the Falken most used for autox and track would be the Azenis Sport RT-215.

Something I didn't see on here...what are your thoughts on Kumho Ecsta Supra 712s? I considered MXs but, from what I saw on TireRack, they don't make them in the sizes I need (205/55-R16, 245/45-R16). When the time comes that I need to replace my tires, I was thinking maybe Yoko AVS ES100 or using the Ecsta Supra 712s again.

If you couldn't tell, I'm budgeting myself on high-perf tires (some DE though realistically not this year but mostly street) and would prefer a tire that'll last a while and have, at least, good grip in both dry and wet conditions.

The Kumhos felt pretty good on the track when I've used them but my only comparison point for tires (in my Porsche anyway) on the track are Bridgestone Potenza RE71s that were discontinued by the time I needed to replace tires. How are the RE750s?

Oh- I'm driving a modded 1987 911 Turbo and if that gives a decent point of reference...oh, I'm also in green for PCA DEs but have around 15 DE days. So I'm looking for a good grip tire that isn't too good since, while I don't want my tires to slow me down, I don't want them to make me artificially fast and slow down my learning process.

Yes

But in my mind worth the extra noise. I had very good luck with the Falkens at Spokane Raceway Park last April. This September I'm going to give the Kumhos a try.

Don't get the 712s. I have them on my street car and would not recommend them for the track.

My important follow-up question is: why? I have no point of reference regarding how good or bad other tires are relative to it.

And where could I go from the 712s given my "conditions" above?

I have used my 712's on the track... not recommended. I thought that they gripped surprisingly well, actually, but they "chunked" badly. There were actually pieces of rubber that had come off of the tread. I don't know if this presented a safety issue, but it certainly wasn't very comforting.

As for where to go from there? Sorry, but other than the 712's, I have only used Michelin Pilot Sport Cups on the track.

Good luck.

Erick
