Default Preventative maintenance - upper and lower control arms ?

I’m about to swap the air struts since mine went bad. What should I do while I’m in there ?

should I be replacing the upper and lower control arms ? My Panamera turbo has about 90k miles on it. PO claims he replaced them both but I do hear some clunk sometimes over bumps.

is there a more cost efficient way to do this ? The kit on Fcp is $1300

How may miles and years since the PO replaced them?

Any idea if he did sway bar links and sway bar bushings as well?

He claims it was done around 60k - sway bar links or bushings were never replaced

Ok. Probably worth inspecting them thoroughly when you do the shock but should be ok. I’d replace the links and sway bar bushings too.

How do you know, definitively, the upper arms are the cause of the clunk?

What about:
- lower ball joints
- lower arm bushings
- stabilizer links or bushings
- steering tie rod joints
- drive axle CV joints

30k miles seems too soon for upper arms to have gone bad again.

I agree with diagnosing and replacing, but will say after doing both front bags and then having to pull them out again to do the upper control arms...I think I would spend the $400 for uppers at the time of bag replacement. It isn't the worst thing to pull them out again but I would consider it.

I like that the kit you linked has all new hardware. I purchased my control arms from autohauosaz.com and got the hardware separately. I will also say I went through the trouble of pressing new bushings into my lower control arms and it wouldn't go through the effort to do that against. Just buy the lower arms if you need them (generally look for leaking).

Shawn,
Yes, agreed the FCP kit is a good deal - one and done. I've replaced bushings, but as noted by Todd ^^, not a fun job and would only consider if upgrading to poly (and that's a whole other discussion).
If you want, can touch base with you tomorrow and can share my thoughts in more detail.

I wouldn't replace unless I needed to. You can start to make a case to just rebuild the entire suspension "while you're at it". And the fact he said he already did replace 30k miles ago? Assuming that's true, I'd leave it alone and use that money for future repairs.
