Default oil level question...

Hello all,

New to Porsche ownership... so go easy on me

I have a 2010 Panamera Turbo - the 'minimal oil level reached' yellow warning came on - so I popped the bonnet to see where the oil went and then popped off to buy some oil.

However when I go to check the oil level I get the 'Oil Level Currently Not Available' message. I took the car for a short drive to get it up to temp, came back parked it, left it for 2 mins tried to get a reading etc. (basically did all the things google told me to do).

Is this because I opened the bonnet and reset it - I read that somewhere? I could get a reading before I did this.

The main question is - is it safe to use the car?
Should I add oil? 250ml?
Should I wait for the system to reset itself / get a reading?

I have no oil warning at the moment - but I also can get a reading.

like most people seem to say it was all less complex with a dip stick

Many thanks in advance.

Cheers

Mark

The oil level needs to be checked after 10 mins of driving, and make sure you're on a flat road to get a more accurate reading. From Min to Max is about a quart, but it's best to add just a little at a time, check again, and refill if needed. No worries, you'll get used to it! I also have a 2010 PTT and they are fabulous cars - enjoy!

@skiracer thanks for the reply - that's the problem I'm having even after a 10 minuite drive I still get the 'Oil Level Currently Not Available' message. So I don't know if I should add anything as i don't want to overfill.

I guess I'm having the same issue as this thread - https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-...available.html

and yea so far I'm impressed with the car it's a very nice place to be - taking a bit of getting used to!

and a pic... why not

I just did this (added a cup or so to top it off) and 10 mins is definitely an estimate- it took much longer for mine to start registering. If it is not squawking at you I'd say go for a drive and be patient. Stupid system.

@orca15 out of interest how long did it take to register? I did read that a yellow warning needs action but isin't an emergency - so even though oil is at minimum, that's OK as but I won't leave it too long, I'd just like the sensor to be working before I add oil! (just incase I overfill it)

Cheers for the reply.

I’m going to guess 15 minutes. Seemed like forever.

Mine takes about half a liter, about every 2500 miles. It definitely takes a while for it to read again. Check it while the engine is still running, because that’s when it reads it. It’ll fluctuate a bit if you’re not on flat ground like others have said.

@Evilci thanks for the reply. So far it's been driven about 5 miles but no reading... so I'm guessing not enough time / distance?

I'd say you are getting there but another 5 should get it. Bring up the display and it will pop up when it is ready

There seems to be two levels of oil alarms. The secondary one (oil really low) gets you a red warning. The dealer shorted the oil fill by 2.5 quarts in my 2014. This secondary alarm didn’t appear until about 15 miles into the drive. Resist the urge to add more until the system can measure it.

Thing about the Porsches is they have lots of oil- I think the 3.0 is 8.5 liters - so running it some while a couple of quarts low doesn't seem like it would be a huge issue. My gut instinct is yellow warning - add a half quart and check, red warning, at least a quart; repeat as necessary.

So far I have gone to the first 10K maintenance with zero oil (5K on the motor and 5K on EV). I added a cup after the oil change to top it off. Fingers crossed - I see above someone is at a liter every 5K. I've had air-cooled Porsche with that sort of burn but never liked it.

I wouldn’t keep driving around too much until you put some oil in. No more than half a liter, then drive till it registers. Now if you get the angry red warning others have mentioned that’s when you stop because something is very wrong. Yellow is the equivalent of being at the bottom end of the dipstick.

The oil reading will become available after a couple of rides. It is not just the time required, it is the distance you drive. I don't quite get the system. Be patient. I check my oil levels periodically. Once I'm over the "middle" level reading, I don't wait any longer, I just add 250 mls and check back after a few drives. You will quickly notice the oil indicator bar moved up a bit. Then you can simply add another 200 mls and you will be good for a while, depending on how much oil your engine burns. My 2016 GTS panny burns hardly any oil, but my previous 2013 GTS burned quite a bit more, but nothing out of ordinary.

@lucian95 thanks for that - and the others who replied.

took it for a drive today and the electronic dip stick showed a measurement - on yellow so added 250ml that's given me one bar. So i'll drive it for a little bit and check it again and add another 250ml until i'm confident i'm doing it right don't want to overfil.

thanks again all.

Each segment in the gauge is approximately 6oz. It takes more than a quote to go from low to full.
