Default Plug in or Charge by Driving

I'm looking at purchasing a Panamera. One of the options (as everyone here knows) is the hybrid version. Question - if the vehicle charges the EV battery while driving (like my current Avalon hybrid) why does the Panamera need to be plugged in?

It doesn't "need" to be plugged in. You can drive it whenever you want in hybrid mode. Plugging it in just charges the battery from your wall rather than the gas tank. You still get all the little charges from braking/coasting either way.

But for every plug-in charge you save whatever the price difference is between 30 miles of gas and 30 miles of electricity... say $5 vs $1.50*.

*15kWh at $0.10 per kWh around here.

It may be obvious at this point, but I should add that - if you drive daily less than 30 miles - you may run full electric all the time. 30 miles, plug in charge, repeat.

Obviously there are practical limits, and apparently the car itself will run the engine occasionally just to keep it lubricated, etc. But a non-plug in could never do that.

So it's like having the choice of three engines - all ICE, hybrid, or all EV - depending on how you feel that day.
