971 roof creaking
#16
I got mine fixed in January, but it never really went away (2018 4S). My biggest observation is that its very temperature sensitive. If the car is left out in the sun for prolonged periods, the creaking is very loud as soon as I start driving (even turning out of the parking spot). But if the car is inside or shaded, the creaking is little to none. Since I moved and now keep it in the garage, I almost never hear the creaking. Only when I go into work and the car is outside, do I get the creaking again.

Interesting. After having the TSB done on my 2018 Turbo about 8 months ago it is dead silent even when going out of my driveway/over curb which torques the chassis. I do get a little creak from the driver's door area under high torque, but it's really minor and definitely not from the roof.

Has anyone had the dealer push back on whether or not this applies to their cars? My SA is saying it doesn't apply to my VIN. Some TSBs specify a VIN range. However, this TSB makes no VIN exclusions as it all seems to have to do with when the car was built - and mine is squarely in the effected window of time.

Ive been having this creak/squeak as well. However, mine goes away if I vent the sunroof, which doesn't really point to these bolt or plate issues.
Took it to the dealer they cleaned the drainage channels and lubricated the seal. They said it's all fixed. Got it to drive home, it's having exactly the same issues.
Scratching head on this one. I don't enjoy driving around in the winter with the roof vented.

Mine creaks in that area also depending on the temperature. It also seems to go away in the first minute of driving. It seems like it's worse in the summer when sitting in the sun. It's not terrible, but it's not something that would happen on say even an entry level Toyota or Honda these days. Much less a six figure car. I think it's just the nature of the glass roof combined with a low volume car.

My dealer did the TSB last year but after a month the creak came back. Went in for service last month and they got a tech that knows how to get rid of creaks work on it and now it is gone. Just talk to another dealer imo if you under warranty.

This creak only began recently in colder temps. It's parked in an insulated garage as well.

My CPO 2018 just started doing this when going up or down driveways. I bought it last month and it just started getting hot out. Anyone else been successful getting it covered with CPO? I’m going to call my dealer and see if they can’t help me out since it was recently purchased.

Got mine fixed twice under warranty; the second time I was about 6 months out of warranty, but my dealership did it on good faith. Ask for a tech that has experience fixing creaks. Been about 6 months and no more creaks.

Not sure when my car was manufactured but it was sold on 8/25/2018. The TSB claims "Since July 23, 2018, the reinforcement plates have been pre-treated during production and there are no longer any unwanted noises."

You can find the build date on the door jamb IIRC. I also had the same problem with creaks and hot weather. I brought it in twice but no real change. Then again, I stopped going to that dealer. Maybe my current one could have fixed it. I've found there are two types of Porsche dealers. Those in the burbs that sell Macans and Cayennes. Those near cities that sell 911s and the like. Go to the latter dealers even if they're farther away and more hassle.

The only numbers I found that resemble a date is on the door black door sticker. It has 04/18 in the upper right corner. Thats gotta be it. Thanks. Im pretty sure this type of stuff is not covered under CPO but I'll see what they say. There is one dealer inside town here in Houston and the rest, mine included is in the suburbs. I'm hoping since I just purchased, the selling dealer might be nice to me.

I think sugarland just opened a dealership, not sure how they are. Houston has good service coverage from what I've read.
FWIW, all of these giant glass panoramic roofs creak to some degree. My wife's A6 Allroad does the safe thing. Might be related to the VAG family, but it's not just this car.

I live in Sugar Land less than 10 min from that dealer but unfortunately I bought my car from Porsche North Houston, so since it’s probably not covered under CPO I think they are my best shot.
I went to the sugar land dealer for a part once and it’s very small. In the main showroom all they had was a 229k Targa 4S and a classic 911 for about 450k!!
Edit - next to the parts counter they also had a base Panamera with base black paint and a few options…130k

Well after a week and a half and two voicemails my SA got back to me and said there's no way he could get CPO to pay for it since nothing is actually broken. I asked how much out of pocket to which he said he said maybe 1500, but he had to look it up and call me back. When (if) he calls back I am going to ask for goodwill or dealer participation since I just bought from them a month and a half ago. If he says no, I will probably pay Porsche Sugar Land to do it. Its mind boggling that I have to beg these people to take my money. When I bought this car they kept telling me how they didn't want me to go to the Sugar Land dealer that I live next to, and they would offer valet loaners to my house so I didn't have to drive an hour for service, but I can't even get a call back. How long does it take to look up TUs for dropping the headliner and multiply it by your labor rate? I even voiced my frustration to my salesperson, and she said she would have him call me back later that day. Crickets two days later.
I have also considered doing it myself, it just seems like a lot of work. I already know how to remove the front console, mirror trim, visors and A pillar from my radar detector hardwiring. They werent bad once I figured out a few tricks. I would need to figure out how to remove the B and C pillars and the grab handles. Also I'm wondering how to get the headliner out of the car without messing it up. Maybe thru the back? If it really is 1500ish, might just be easier to leave it and drive a loaner for a bit.
