Oil top off question
Hi all,
Can anyone help me understand why the car doesn’t want to read oil level anymore after all I did is added 1 quartz of oil? Reading it prior was fine, now I have no idea whats the oil level. This is a 970.
It tells me that “reading oil level is not available”.
I drove it for a bit, parked it and couple hours later same message.
Thank you very much.

After opening the hood you have to drive a certain minimum distance before a oil level reading is available. I don't remember the exact distance off hand. 15-20 miles roughly. This is discussed in the manual as well.

Well, did some shopping. Perhaps 5 miles round trip, still cant read that level.
My first dislike I guess after 2 months of ownership. It should tell the driver whats the level within at least 10 minutes.

The 970.2 manual says the car must be driven a minimum of 10km before oil level can be read. I don't have information for the 971. Check your owner's manual to be sure.

it does seem ridiculous you would have to drive then be able to check oil level. i had ordered a kit from pelican and they only sent me 5 liters of oil. i knew the car held 9 and my math skills are okay but decided to just order more oil to be safe. the only way i have been able to check my oil in 50 attempts is start car in garage and back out and turn car off then check. between the air filter and checking the oil thank god the car is fast or id be pissed. i had looked all through my owners manual and i couldn't find anything on having to drive car a certain amount of miles. watched a youtube video on changing the oil and they said they ran the car for 10 minutes in parking lot to running temp then checked oil. i have no idea

Anyhow, you definitely need to drive for quite a bit before it pops up. It does indeed surface, no worries! In my case, I think it took about 20 minutes, and that’s with some highway in there. This is something that happens every time you pop the hood. Have fun! Jon

I recently got a Panamera as well. I changed the oil about two weeks ago, and ran into the same issues. It really is silly that you can’t measure the levels when you are trying to make it right! But, if you wait long enough for the pan to totally empty, I think it takes 9.5 quarts on the nose.

I agree with homerj, I also miss the dipstick. Not to mention I'm not sure if I really trust a picture of the level on the TFT.
And while we're at it, another thing. Why do I have to drive off to check my tire pressure? All my other cars read out the psi, and the temps, right after starting the car.

that's interesting about the 9.5 its. i filled it to 9 and then took a little roadtrip and halfway there the oil light came on. so i thought i didn't tighten the filter or drain plug enough. and to try and find the oil i purchased from pelican was hell. good oil, so i figured id put half a quart in and see and been good for awhile now. so i now keep a quart in car. haha

Hey All,
I know this is an old thread but I am a new to 970 owner. I have read the car consumes oil and it is normal. My car has 70K on it and the low level oil light came on only to learn no dip stick. I have no manual Go figure. So my hood has been up and I am tempted to add 1 quart and see if it changes after a drive. I have a 2012 S 4.8L. Any risk here? thinking that it holds so much in the sump 1 quart should not overfill if it truly thinks it's low. Thoughts, comments or snide remarks welcomed.
This is the newest variation of Porsche I have owned so the learning curve on fix it myself seems to have changed.
Cheers, and thanks in advance, Mike
