Default Is black trim a passing fad?

It seems like it wasn't all that long ago that black trim really wasn't a thing. Now it's all over the place, with everything from the Ford Explorer to the Mini to Range Rovers to all sorts of other marks/models and, of course, Porsche offering black out/night packages, black wheels, black roofs, mirrors, window trim etc. And of course there's also the whole after-market wrap and plasti-dip scene.

I personally LOVE the look of it, but I'm not sure if that's because it's still (sort of) new and shiny to my eyes. My PTT ST came with some black trim (around the windows and headlights specifically) and I'm thinking about having the wheels done. Which may of course lead to mirrors. And smoked/clear tail lights. and.......

I do wonder though, is this the kind of design trend we'll look back at in a few years and ask "WTF?" or will it have staying power?

I am not a fan of chrome trim. I like black window trim, black exhaust tips, etc. on the right car color. I am not sure I have gotten there on blacked out wheels and tinted taillights for the full murdered out look but it is growing on me. There is a blacked out thread for a sapphire blue panny in the recent threads and I think the end result looks much better. He blacked out the Turbo II wheels as well.

Yup that car is the one that inspired me to do my wheels. Or at least contemplate same....

black trim for 'sporty' models of cars has been a thing for decades.. I don't expect it to suddenly change.

Not arguing, just asking - can you show me some from 20+ years (i.e. decades) ago?

I'm a fan, though would point out that in the late 60s and into the 70s a model called Twiggy made popular an androgynous, flat-chested look that was all the rage...

how about closer to 50 years ago?

This has subtle polished AL trim around windows and chrome bumpers. Although I am thinking about blacking out the window trim, door handles, side mirrors but leaving the bumpers in chrome.

That car is AWESOME and I think could look great by blacking out some of the chrome. I was asking @Strassenkurven about his assertion though that it was "a thing" and available 20+ years ago. Again, not arguing, just asking as I don't recall that being a thing. Would love to see some makes/models that had it. I *do* recall some BMWs from....say around 2005-10 that had black window trim, but not much else that I recall.

The e30 m3 over a standard e30 (like a 318i) is a great example.
Another is the mk2 GTI, which had black grilles (some with red lines around them) and blacked out trim and bumpers, while less sporty models often had chrome trim on windows and bumpers, painted silver around the grille, etc.

It's pretty easy to find examples from the 80s, especially for German cars.

Ah! Indeed. Great calls, great cars. The Germans seem to have been ahead on this look.

E39 and E38 both had black shadowline trim for sport package and M car variants from about the 1998 time-frame.
