5w30 vs 0w40 oil for 2018 Panamera 4s
The manual calls for 5w30 oil. I've noticed my oil temperature getting high as 225 in regular highway driving.
I drive pretty aggressively and am considering going to some track days in the Panamera.
My porsche dealer recommends 0w40 for the track.
I'm wondering what other people's thoughts are.

I don't track my car but always use 0W40 Mobil 1, the reason I chose this was my car's, a 2010, manual prescribed it. I check the specs on different "equivalent" grades and found the ingredients differed substantially. Porsche chose 0W40 because the lubrication of the internals required protection against sliding wear. I regularly have an oil analysis done on the used oil and my car's wear characteristics (at 50,000+ miles) are excellent. Porsche does a lot of homework in designing its engines, so why would anyone disregard their recommendations?

0w40 seems to be the default for porsches that I've read on the forums but the manual specifically calls for 5w30 in the new 2017/2018 4s.
It even specifies 0w20 or 5w20 for the base Panamera and Panamera 4 models.
I'm trying to understand why the change from 0w40 in previous models to 5w30 in the newer ones and why my dealer would recommend 0w40 for track use.

The change to a lower weight oil is likely for fuel efficiency... lower viscosity oil. It would not hurt to use the wider range 0W-40, other than fuel efficiency.
