Default Mercedes 500e W124

I'm looking at kind of a garage find 500e that has been sitting for a couple of years. Immediately known issue is it's not holding a battery charge.

I'd love to hear from anyone with experience with these cars, or with what to watch out for in any car that's been sitting for an extended period.

Thanks in advance.

Wiring is almost sure to be rotten. The insulation in the wires doesn't last even on cars that are actively being maintained. You are in for many shorts and electronic issues, not surprised about the battery.

That frightens me. Did occur to me that a car sitting that long could have some other rodent occupants.

Wonder how big a job that is to correct?

A big job. Rodents or no rodents, the materials were/are biodegradable.

Ha! I was just reading that thread after you suggested the wiring might be degraded!

Beautiful cars that are getting harder and harder to find good examples.

you need a good ppi done. I think these cars had soy based wiring harness's which degrade due to heat. The benz forum is a better place for excellent intel. 92 was the first year I think for this body style, not sure. Check for leaks in the differential

Always liked that car back in the day, especially when compared to the 300E. Slightly wider fenders give it a more aggressive look. Any engine shots?

Hatch sold the 500E that Mercedes gave to Little Al for winning Indy. It was a great color, Spruce Green.

I like the 6-speed RennTech 500E they have. Just wish it had headlight wipers and a more understated color combo.

I think that is my favorite color on those cars.
