That is true. Low priced rat traps are a bane to any enthusiast car. V8 Mustangs in Australia are the same way, they don't care if it was a 6 cylinder car with a swap, etc. The same thing will happen in the US- kiddies don't have money, and at that age (we were all young at one time) we're looking for the best bang for the buck.

Nice, clean, cars will always be at a premium, and even in Japan the R32 GT-R is a high dollar car IF it's a coveted, well kept car. Case in point- we brought in two NISMO BNR32 for the US market, one was more ratty (#383 I nicknamed it Mickey Rourke) and the other much cleaner (#500). The clean car was three times the price of Mickey.

The bigger issue about the R32 GT-Rs is- since it originally was a homologation special, the interior was designed to be a quick stripper- and that interior deteriorates quick for a premium Japanese car. There's a big market for OE interior bits and pieces because of that- discoloration, fabric wear and dash deformation/delaminating are all problems.

Couldn't he have picked up a GTS-T and swapped an RB26 in for a lot less?

He could have but it doesnt have some of the upgrades the GT-R has and this one is a perfectly legal not a grey market car.
Also I assume you have a Merkur XR4Ti?

Pulling the diff and front axles and front driveshaft is easy. In fact you don't even have to pull the axles. ATTESA will get pissed off though because you'll get weird wheel speed readings. Gotta unplug that too. Once you do all that it's really not much of a GT-R anymore, more like a Silvia/180sx/240sx RB swap. I wouldn't have done that but hey, to each their own, right?

I wouldn't have done it either. He threw a front axle one night driving home and pulled the fuse to get the rest of the way home. He liked it more as a RWD so instead of fixing it he gutted it.

Axles are available at the Driveshaft Shop.

RX6 are big snails. I tried the 53B60s and didn't like them. Good all around turbos are the 2530 for a stock block. On my 2.8l the GT-RS turbos really wake up with mild cams with mild lift. On a stock block they typically have problems with high boost threshold and lag, probably similar to the RX6. Not the kind of response I like.

Also I like the R35 brakes on yours.
A couple cars back he built a legit 1000rwhp S2000. Insane car.

My S2000, about a dozen years ago-

You can say that again. This is a picture of his setup. It ran on E85.

Wow, once upon a time that engine bay was simple. That's a lot of stuff in there. I assume it was a drag racer?

No just an around town fun car. There is no rhyme or reason to what he builds. He does what he wants. He actually drove it from DC to Philly and back one time on his 750hp setup and did Skyline drive on this setup. He just kept a fuel can full of E85 with him to fill up.
