Default Help-VW Gas Smell

So apparently, the VW forums of this world suck, at least from my short experience with them. Anyway, my girlfriend has a 1999 VW Golf that is emitting a very potent gas smell into the cabin. It's really strong, even when driving with the windows down. I have no clue what the cause of it could be or where it could be coming from. Any ideas? Are VWs notorious for fuel line deterioration or is it something really simple? Any help would be great, thanks guys!

Yes, but not always. For the most part it stays on, but it will also periodically go off and stay off for a week or so.

Do you have a way to check the faults? I wonder if you're having a problem with the evaporative emission system.

Like one of those diagnosis scanners with the VGA plug that you hook up to your car? If that's what you're talking about I might be able to use one from a friend. Thanks for the tip.
