Default e36 OBD II error (P0442) Evap Leak Small

Small evap leak error

From first hand experience I've found the problem to be caused by:

1) Gas cap - cheap and easy first try fix

2) Evap canister - minor pain to remove, located above the right wheel liner between the liner and the fuel filler neck. have to remove the RR wheel and liner to get to it. 3 or 4 hoses attached, most likely one of the small hose nipples will be cracked at the canister. Can sometimes use plastic cement to (temp) repair it. My repair attempt lasted about 9 mos., next time I just replaced the canister.

3) Main fuel line hose between filler tube and fuel tank - about the size of a radiator hose w/ 90 deg bend. It loops over the RR axle and goes into the fuel tank. Found the filler end was loose by accident and hose clamp just couldn't get a tight fit. Replaced the hose ($55 - 80 depending on source) and error went away. Happened to be doing a major service on the car, when checking CV boots noticed fuel hose wasn't seated all the way on the (long) filler neck. Tried to tighten but it just wouldn't get a firm grip on the filler neck (tank end was fine), new hose fits nice and snug on both ends.

No more P0442 errors.
