Anyone have one? Can anyone share their experience with them. The guys on the M5 forums talk about problems in general but no specifics or on reliability. They mainly discuss SMG pumps and the Red Cog of Death. I may have a chance to buy a relatively low mileage (45k mile) for cheap I think. It is an Individual color, Onyx Blue exterior on Individual interior color Champagne full leather with Executive Pkg. I'm not a fan of the light interior but can live with it if the price is as good as I think. One owner, full service history car, 2nd set of winter wheels. I should be in it for less than $28k CDN.
I had a BMW M6 2006. It is not an M5 but it shares the same engine and electronic stuffs.
The car was really good, but be careful regarding the maintenance costs. To have the money to buy this car is one thing, to have the money to maintain it is another one. Lot of electronics stuff and expensive parts. I personally had no problem with the M6, but I only kept it 6 months and sold it, because I had no warranty on it, and didn't want to have bad surprises. You will find lots of info on this car on m5board.com.
The E39 M5 is a great car but can still have some headaches, just because it's a BMW and because it's an M5. The E60 is less fun to drive d/t less low-end torque, and the first generation of the SMG is rather problematic and very very very very very expensive to repair. Even with the second generation, repairs are expensive as are clutch replacements.
