I have jeep. It is a love/hate thing. Car people will ever understand a jeep. You really have to be a gearhead to appreciate a jeep. It is so basic, even if fitted with niceties like A/C which always seem as add-ons rather than part of a designed system. That said i love it to bits, even though it costs me a bandage or two a year.
This one, with the wheels, dump the flares.

I had a 91 and tried the same as you; it was much better looking leaving the flares on and they protected the paint pretty well too. My XJ was damn near bullet-proof but the back seats were like sitting on a park bench. The family rebelled so I sold the best 4WD IMO I've owned. Except for a case of the typical 4.0L piston slap my Cherokee would go anywhere and the low-end torque was unbelievable for crawling. I miss that rig dearly

Oooops, Sorry. I missed your post.
Nah its a stinger, many uses. On first sight, if you hit a deer, it doesnt come through your windshield, Its designed so driving thought the woods (which I do alot) you can run over small trees and not screw up your truck. Pushes them off to the side.
Keeps you from doing an end over end on extreme down hill runs.
Also, its helpful when people want to pull out in front of you. They think twice.

I guess I'm the only one who likes it better with them off. Looks higher, more utilitarian.

The only vehicle I'd give up my FSB for is a Cherokee - maybe a TJ - but definitely a Cherokee.
And yeah - these rock:
