It was a sealing ring that wasn't installed properly.

Now first gear slips under heavy throttle. Time for another phone call on Monday. Ugh.

And now the car is barely driveable, still no warranty repair yet. Just in case the worst happens, are there any other rebuilder recommendations? I haven't given up hope yet that this will work out, but I have very little hope left.

Was this a complete rebuild, partial rebuild or a repair?

Complete rebuild. After two days it had a failure because of an issue with a seal. Was told he'd pay a local shop to fix it. He didn't. Was told he'd pay after I had paid them ~$85 so I could get reimbursed. He didn't.

Now I've been getting the jerk around for weeks on this current problem. First and second gear are almost impossible to drive in. 3rd gear slips badly. I was told he would have a trans ready for me so I could bring the car on a Saturday morning and he could do the work while I waited. I was told that would be "no problem." After several weeks of delaying, when this Saturday was supposed to be a "firm date," he tells me he'd need to have the car for ~4 days. That means I'd be looking at about over $500 between gas and car rental.

Given that the initial rebuild was supposed to take one week and took 3, I have my doubts that it would only be ~4 days and not weeks, meaning I'd be out about another grand.

That was addressed in posts 4 and 5. The 928 uses the Mercedes transmission.
