Not really, in the old IBM mainframe days they did that all the time. When you wanted more grunt from your computer you paid IBM an obscene amount of money and your regular service guy waltzed in with the 'golden screwdriver'. 10 minutes later, voila.

I'm not too surprised by this, and the one way that it could add benefit, is the used car market, I'm in SoCal, so don't need heated seats ( not often anyway) but then I sell the car, or move to a colder part of the country and would like it
then you can add it? or you add heated seats for 3 months of the year. Compared to the $500 to add it ( esp with a BMW and their generally great lease deals - pre-covid )

It pisses me off to even pay for the map updates. I wouldn’t buy another BMW, not that Ive been tempted to lately.

BMW did try this a few years back with Apple CarPlay subscriptions and had to end it after much uproar. Thanks to that also Porsche dropped the CarPlay payment in 2021. So BMW tries this once again. It make a lot of sense for them. After Tesla, BMW has the most developed and most reliable infotainment platform (iDrive 8), that gives Porsche’s PCM a run for the money.
We’ll see if is sticks this time…

BMW already tried this in the US market with Carplay... it went over exactly how the reactions on this thread would make you think and they ultimately went back to only charging upfront for it. And carplay makes more sense than heated seats as it needs ongoing updates.

Subscriptions will eventually make their way back to North America. This is the way the world is turning unfortunately.

If I paid for the option ... heated seats, ventilated seats, nav, etc ... why do I have to keep paying? If its a subscription, fine. But then it should not be an extra cost option (as many BMW and Porsche add-ons are) and then a subscription fee as well. BMW backed down on airplay. Lets hope Porsche never feels the urge to screw the faithful.

All of this seemed to begin with software companies, remember when you used to buy Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Office? Now you pay a monthly subscription fee which a much higher revenue stream for those companies than someone who buys the software every few years. I think the predecessor to this model may have been the cell phone companies, where everything is a monthly fee and almost no one buys outright on a new phone.
The younger generation is more than happy to hand over their auto-credit card for a monthly debit to it - for years on end - for the sake of convenience.
There is no way I am paying a monthly subscription to use an automotive feature. Not happening. If need be, I'll just go more analog on my cars. Hello, Singer?

imagine the rest of the car going subscription; automatic window, intermittent wipers, radio, etc.

Good God.
Personally, things like music, which is streaming, and the company has to pay royalty rights…sort of make sense to go to a subscription…but headlights? That’s a safety issue? Will there soon be a subscription for air bags and seat belts?
