Anyone have an opinion on this car? It's a bit more expensive than a 992, with an estimated price of $210k. 617hp, 0-60 in around 3 seconds and a top speed over 200mph. And with a more luxurious interior than previous McLarens.
The prices on the McLaren's option sheet make Porsche's option sheet look like a bargain -- the real world price difference is bigger than you may think.
Before I settled in on getting a 992, I originally considered a 570GT. Then, when the new GT was announced, it looked like an even better option. Unfortunately, the reliability issues scared me away. The long distance touring appeal is diminished greatly by nuisance issues that every other manufacturer has sorted out by now and they're accompanied by a tiny dealer network. So, when you encounter an issue, it's going to be much more of a pain than it should be to get it fixed. Given these issues, it's easy to understand the spectacular, class-leading depreciation.
With that depreciation, at one point, I considered a used 570GT, but McLaren builds the kind of car where a low mileage 2-3 year old example manages to have 3-4 owners. That's not good. To be fair, the GT hasn't been out long enough to demonstrate the common McLaren problems, but given that every other car that they make has reliability issues, why would this one be different?
If you want the "billionaire doors", have an excellent dealer nearby, and can put up with check engine lights, spoiler faults, and waiting for parts, they're really cool cars. If you want to drive, get a 992.
If you choose to ignore all of the realities of ownership and still want to get one, McLaren Philadelphia is the best McLaren dealer in the United States. They are to McLaren what Lamborghini Newport Beach is to Lamborghini. People all over the country buy from them. Super knowledgeable guys that can get the darnedest limited specifications.
I’m really fond of McLaren’s design aesthetic. They are shiny and stand out. But I think the GT use is a tough comparison against a 911. You can get a very lightly used 991.2 TTS for less that is faster and more luxurious. I suspect this McLaren makes a fun special occasion drive. If you want something that stands out more than a 911, the McLaren will do that...
