Description:

Quick summary:
Beautiful and rare 1987 911 Turbo Targa in original Venetian Blue exterior with Marine Blue leather upholstery.. 73830 original miles. Never in an accident. Clean Carfax. No bodywork has been done. No paint-work has been done, except for the Targa rail has been recently professionally power-coated.
Two thousand miles ago it was mechanically gone through with nearly 62k in receipt invoices to show. It runs and handles amazingly.
Cosmetically, it's mostly been left alone except for new leather on the front seats, and new cover on the Targa top.
Between the Coup, the Cabriolet, and the Targa, I believe this is the rarest of 930 models sold in the U.S. that year, and 1987 was the first production year for the 930 available in the Targa model.
My wife and I have considered selling this car for a while now. We love the car, but with our schedules and lifestyle, we never find the time to drive the car as it should be.
More details:
History:
My wife and I got our 1987 930 Targa (aka 911 Turbo) brand new from Carlsen Porsche/ Audi in Palo Alto California back in 1987. We are the original owners. My wife used it to commute to work from our first home in Mountain View CA, to San San Francisco CA. This is how the vehicle accumulated the majority of its total miles.
In 1993 we moved up to a new home in the Santa Cruz Mountains where we started having kids, so the Porsche became impractical and we would rarely if ever use it. My father-in-law who is a Porsche enthusiast was worried the car was sitting too much, so around 2008 and at about 69500 miles, he asked to borrow it for a year or two so it could be driven, and so he could get the work and maintenance done he felt the car needed. During the period between 2008 and 2010, it was kept at my in-law's home in Los Altos Hills Ca, and my father-in-law had European Autoworks in Sunnyvale California pretty much go through the entire vehicle mechanically, along with a few cosmetics, spending about $62,000.00 which I have the invoice/receipts in my possession. There has only been about 2k miles put on the car since all of this work has been done. The car was registered in my in-laws names during this time because of insurance requirements. They returned the car back to us around May of 2013, and back into our names. At that time it had about 72000 miles on it. It now has 73829 miles.
I start the car once every two weeks or so and take it out for a very short drive to keep it healthy. It always starts right up, and runs great.
The car has current registration which expires on 07/26/2025. The car was recently smogged on 7/29/2024. The photos do not show the current registration sticker on the plate. I have the sticker, but feel the original licence plate is unattractive and the new owner might want to replace the plate with a new one, so the current registration sticker is still staples to the registration paper. .

Condition:
I will try to list/point out most everything that isn't perfect besides normal wear.
It is in excellent mechanical condition and runs great.
It looks very nice for being 37 years old but is not cosmetically perfect. These photos are after I did a light cleaning but the car has not been fully washed or detailed in a few years. It has never been in an accident and has never had any body-work or paint done to the body.
There are two significant scratches on the passenger door (someone keyed the door years ago) which we never got fixed.
There are some very small chips or small dings about the body but nothing major in size, and some minor speckling on the front as expected from road dust. . Over-all the paint looks pretty nice.
There are a few very tiny small hairline cracks near the center-top of the dashboard.
The tires have almost all of their tread but they are probably over 10 years old so they likely will need replacing. The rims have scrapes from curbs and would need to be re-conditioned to look like new.
The original Blaupunkt radio still works but the cassette tape function is finicky.
Installed and shown is an after-market steering wheel. I still have the original but the stitching has begun to come undone on the steering wheel cover. My father in-law put the after-market steering wheel on because he wanted more space between his thighs and the steering wheel.
I believe my father-in-law had the power seat controls replaced but they are acting up again. It could just be a connection in the switch.
The driver's power window stopped working as well and the switch is loose on the door.
The bottom rubber edge of the front spoiler has a few scrapes from contact with parking curbs.
There is a small cut in the rubber on the front bumper.
It has never been in an accident.
It has never had any body-work done.
It still has the original paint (except for the Targa Rail which my father and law had professionally power coated). The Targa vinyl top was slightly faded so my father in-law had it professionally re-covered and it looks new . The front seats had normal wear, but my father in-law decided he wanted them to look new so he had the front seats re-upholstered. The rest of the upholstery is original and looks nice. Otherwise, the car is basically stock besides the extensive mechanical work done about 2k miles ago. Amongst many other things: clutch, complete valve job, door & Targa seals. engine seals, hoses, bulbs, ac service, brakes/rotors, ...and much more). Too many to list. Details can be seen in the copies of the receipts which I will provide upon request of a serious buyer.
It has no oil leaks. Always starts quickly and easily.

I believe there were four standard models: The "Coupe" model. The "Targa" model. The Slant Nose model. And the "Cabriolet" model.
1987 was the first production year for the 930 available in the Targa model .
In 1987, there were only 87 Targa models built for the U.S. market.
In 1887, there were 1605 Coupe models built for the U.S.
in 1987, there were 183 Cabriolet models built for the U.S.
In 1987, there were 200 Slant Nose models built for the U.S.

In regard to sales/comps for the 930 Targa, I've been watching the market for over 8 years and can only find about ½ dozen 930 Targas that have been sold. Most of these were sold on the Bring A Trailer Auction site.
To give an example of how rare the 930 "Targa" model is in the three years it was offered,1987, 1988,1989, there have only been a total of 5 auctions that I could find for the 930 Targa model, and as of a few moths ago, there were 238 auctions for the other 930 models.
The five 930 Targas that were auctioned on Bring a Trailer sold for 255k, 215k, 158k, 150k, 100k. Averaging 175k, not including the additional BAT fees.

I've contemplated putting this car up for sale on Bring A Trailer. This 930 has not yet had some of the cosmetic work done which might be necessary to ready it for auction, but I'd rather first try to sell it in its honest condition before doctoring it up. I believe the new owner might prefer to have any further work done under their own control and supervision.
This would also eliminate the additional $6000-$7500 buyers fee on top of the sale price if auctioned on Bring a Trailer.

I added some photos of the under carriage the best I could without having a lift. These are pics in its honest condition without it have being power-washed, cleaned, or detailed in several years.
I also tried to upload a video showing the car being started along with the engine compartment but was unsuccessful, so here is a link to where I posted that video on YouTube:
