Description:
Up for sale is my much beloved 1990 ROW (Japan - sunroof delete) 964 Carrera 2. I purchased this car from Abreu Motors in the fall of 2019. I wanted a driver's quality 964 and looked for some time before landing on this one. It came in pretty good shape but I have since done everything mechanically to get it fully sorted for my uses which is mostly the occasional canyon drive these days. It drives great and feels very solid on the road. I am reluctant to sell but since my move to Colorado I have limited garage space and am making room for my KEEN safari car that will be here this fall.
I'd like to be as transparent as possible so will try to list all the negatives (almost all cosmetic) first so anyone who is interested knows what they are getting before deciding to continue further:
I have no way of verifying the miles as original (the title reads as original and not TMU). I have very limited records from it's life in Japan other than some service items which are all in Japanese. I have pictures of the engine out in the 2010's but have no record of the work done at the time. My mechanic believes it likely has a lightweight flywheel and an upgraded clutch. The car runs and shifts great with very little oil seepage so haven't had a need to drop the motor to investigate those claims. In the list of work I have done below you will see I ran a compression test last winter and the engine is still in good shape.
As can be seen by the paint and plastic interior items the car spent time in the sun. Some of the items like seat belt holders and rear view mirror are faded from that. These are easy fixes but I haven't gotten around to it, and they don't bother me for my driving purposes. The paint has evidence of a respray at some point as the paint thickness meters between 6-15 depending on what part of the car is measured. It is also in driver's condition with some patina on the front fenders and some wear in the front. There are a few spots on the roof that has sun spots in the clear coat. The car shows great, but these are just details if you were to get up close and do a detailed look at it. The paint has a great color almost like a slate metallic in the sun and darker in the shadows or under artificial light. The car came to me without the spoiler control unit under passenger seat so it's inoperable. I planned on a ducktail eventually so haven't addressed that.
Now to the positives... This car drives great. It is very fun in the twisties and I can lead trips up the pass with modern fast cars behind me. The temps always stay just between the first and mid notch even under spirit driving for several hours and +/- elevation changes from 5-9K feet which I do regularly. The steering and braking feel is excellent. As can be seen from the work list I did a suspension refresh with bilstein shocks and HR springs as well as FD motorsports short shifter, golden rod, and rennline pedal kit. It is aligned similar to 964 RS. The AC works well. Occasional fan squeaking so may just need some lubricant. For comfort I have added a Continental bluetooth radio as well as new rear speakers. It's no bose but does the job on the long trips. The car doesn't rattle or any weird noses on drives and is comfortable around town.
The car passed inspection and emissions in Colorado. Due to it being a ROW car it can't be registered in California.
For anyone interested. I can jump on a facetime to give a more detailed look. I'm currently traveling but will be back to my house early next week.
