996 Three Spoke Steering Wheel Leather,
For SaleAccessories
Description:
[edit] I believe it is after market as there is no Porsche part number. The part number stamped into the inside under where the air bag would sit is 996 347 804 54, A28; I believe it fits years 1999-2006, 911 and Boxster. Although I can see no visible machining marks, the hub has supposedly been machined to .5 inch greater depth to accommodate mounting on a 928. It will still fit a 996, it may need a couple washers to replace the material that was removed and bring the hub back to its original position. The stitching and grip areas are in good to excellent condition, normal wear, no scratches or defects. I will include a clock spring to sweeten the sale. Pls PM me with zip, so I can pack and calculate weight for shipping cost to be added to whatever agreed upon price is negotiated. Thanks for your interest.
Since we are not allowed to edit the original, I must put this here, and note the original ad says machining .5 inch: that is incorrect, the correct measurement is stated below.
The 996 steering wheel/air bag/clock spring fits 928's, 944's, and 968's that originally came with the 4 spoke airbag wheel. It also fits 996's and 986's, but will need about 5mm thickness of washers to compensate for the machine shop removal of 5mm to provide the increased depth for full purchase of the nut on the front engine cars.

Your price of $250 for the steering wheel alone is, in my opinion, a bargain. A savvy 986 owner who wants a 3-spoke would be wise to purchase yours then waiting for an airbag bargain. GLWS.
I was asked for additional pictures, specifically of the machining. It concerns the very center, if you didn't know it was done, you would not notice the slightly more shiny area surrounding the spline teeth. You can see there is no damage to the teeth, there is about an inch of purchase left to the hub, the loss of 5 mm is a non-issue, as mentioned one or two flat washers will replace the lost material. Also of note, re the clock spring, both splines, the little "Y" sticking up. They frequently get broken when being removed or on re-assembly. Both are in perfect condition. Be very careful when fitting the wheel over these critters. They are fragile, but will be fine if you take your time.
