What DOES this car offer?

Actually, it’s hard for me to call out the spectacular steering feel or the amazing throttle response and corresponding engine / exhaust symphony as the #1 highlight.

The steering feel IS spectacular. The hydraulic rack (no epas) combined with a performance oriented alignment [ [url=http://volligautowerks.com/]Vollig Autowerks ] enables fingertip – sensitive feedback and control through the thicker, leather wrapped steering wheel. True, you’ll feel most every blemish in the road surface, but you’ll also clearly feel the grip available as you trailbrake and then sniff the apex of your favorite canyon road or track.

I’ll speak to engine response, rather than throttle response. Though the stock intake system bolted on top of a Mezger designed engine provides amazing throttle response it’s actually the engine / head design and the cam timing that really makes this car sing. Driving this car on appropriate back roads between 4,000 and 7,500 RPM is a “religious experience”. As you apex and fully depress the throttle to “come on the cams”, you will enjoy the raw, visceral experience, ‘specially when you extend your skills and the car’s engine to the 8,200 rpm redline. Guaranteed!

Not to be ignored is the exhaust note. Even with a completely stock exhaust the engine really does sing, perhaps an over-used description, yet true. Trust me, the only time you’ll use the barely adequate radio is when you’re in the car cleaning the windshield.

What DOESN’T this car offer?

·        A sunroof

·        A Please Save Me button

·        An adjustable suspension button

·        A “sport” exhaust button

·        Torque vectoring, you’ll just have to make do with a mechanical LSD, your brake pads will thank you.

Why should you buy THIS 996 GT3?

It is an enthusiast owned, fastidiously maintained, three owner, (me twice), launch color car always based in California with desirable aesthetic and performance options and no stories.

The paint is in excellent condition.

I recently polished and waxed the car prior to taking “beauty photos” for the for sale advert and even though I’ve owned the car (again) for nearly 7 years, I was delighted to see just how good the paint is. There are no dents / dings and certainly no rust or other paint / body repairs. NOTE: the hood has been repainted. When I bought it back from owner #3, it had a small chip down to the primer (even through PPF). I removed the PPF, had my local paint guru spot repair the hood and then re-cleared the entire hood.

This car has been highly maintained (no deferred maintenance items) and has had the few weak points sorted with upgrades.

Maintenance includes;

·        Oil changes every year with Mobil 1 5 – 50. Oil analysis reports available (X3).

·        Transaxle oil changes every 2 years with Porsche PTX. Oil analysis report available (X1).

·        Coolant changed every two years with the Porsche pink stuff.

·        Brake system flushed at least yearly, currently using Motul 650.

·        Coolant expansion tank replaced during engine out “pinning”.

·        Pretty much every rubber hose replaced during engine out “pinning”.

·        Water pump replaced during engine out “pinning”.

·        Fuel filter replaced during engine out “pinning”.

·        Spark plugs and coil packs changed during engine out “pinning”.

·        Lottsa time spent under the car while on the lift cleaning. Very pretty underside.

·        Nearly new PCCB specific OEM brake pads front and rear, < 1500 miles. Rotors have < 10,000 miles. The first owner R&R’d the rotors & pads since he worked as a Porsche line mechanic and had connections.

·        Two new catalytic converters and four new O2 sensors as described in more detail below.

Upgrades include;

·        LSD rebuilt with Guards Transmission components.

·        Coolant pipes removed, cleaned, re-epoxied and pinned.

·        LWF installed along with new 996 Turbo type clutch / Pressure Plate (my left knee is a bit weak so did not go the 4.0 route. Original Clutch / PP / FW included with ~ 42,000 miles.

·        Performance alignment, great for grip, not so great for tyre life.

·        Lowered ride height and corner balanced.

·        Rennline front bumper cover screens.

If you live in California or other location that requires “smog” testing, read this carefully. If not, skip ahead.

Some 996 / 997 GT3s have challenges setting the catalyst efficiency readiness monitor.  The short story is that to pass smog successfully you need to have readiness monitors set. If your car’s O2 sensors or catalytic converters are defective, the catalyst efficiency monitor will not set and you’ll need to buy some parts, or sell the car out of state.

My car had a marginal catalytic converter on the passenger side and the monitor would not set. I spent $3000.00 last summer to buy two of the last four converters left in the world (as of Aug 2020). I also purchased new O2 sensors.

This car now sniffs clean and passes California emissions testing.

Now comes the bullet list;

·        VIN = WPOAC299X4S692710

·        Speed Yellow over Black  Leather.

·        Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes.

·        48,0XX miles.

·        Fastidiously maintained, by me.

·        8 – 10 DE / TT track days with my friends @ PCA, no one wants to bend their cars, so I drive with them.

·        Factory sport seats, painted yellow backs and yellow stitching.

·        Yellow console and gauges.

·        Original wheels are in excellent condition. Includes GT3 center caps.

·        Barely used tyres, Yoko Advan AD08R 235 – 40 and 295 – 30. Full disclosure: old DOM 2015 and 2017, but soft, supple sticky. If you know 996 GT3, you know challenges in finding good tyres in appropriate sizes. I bought these several years ago, stored them and recently installed them.

Options as per COA;

·        MSRP $117,395.00

·        450 Ceramic Composite Brakes – PCCB

·        454 Cruise Control

·        49   Black with Full Leather

·        573 A/C with Full Climate Control

·        C45 Instrument dials in Yellow

·        CPR Dash trim strip in exterior color

·        CPZ Thicker steering wheel

·        M6A Black mats – Porsche Lettering

·        P74 Xenon Headlamp package

·        X4  Speed Yellow

·        XME Center console painted exterior color

·        XSY Seat belts – Speed Yellow

·        Z0997 Custom tailoring (not sure what this means, maybe the items below)

·        Z84G Deviated stitching front seats GT3

·        Z88 Door and dash stitching – deviated color

Four owners;

·        1st = JB, a Porsche line mechanic, he over-maintained it on the company dime, including having new Rotors and Pads installed @ 26,000 miles just because he could.

·        2nd = Me.

·        3rd = GP, a fastidious rennlister who was going to track it, decided it was too nice and turned it into a garage queen.

·        4th = Me.

Documentation / Other included;

·        2 original ignition keys

·        1 original valet or center console key (not sure which it is)

·        All owner’s manuals in leatherette pouch

·        PDF of installed options (COA)

·        GT3 “hardback” marketing book

Issues;

·        The radio reception kinda sucks.

·        The front hood was spot repaired and re-cleared due to a rock chip down to the primer as described above.

Cost

$83,996.00

Do you think this is too expensive?

Fair question, but if you’re in the market for a 6 GT3, you probably know what it costs to;

·        Rebuild the differential - > $1650 just for parts

·        “Pin” the coolant lines - > $3000 + “while you’re in there” item costs

·        Set ride height / corner balance / align the chassis - >$750

The above items (and many more) have already been completed

A “cheaper” 6 GT3 will likely end up costing you more to bring it to the same high level.

I’m happy to facilitate a PPI at your expense.

I’ll include a smog certificate if buyer is within California.

Thanks for looking

I have seen the car in person. It’s one of the best examples out there. Both visually and mechanically. Whoever buys it will be very happy with it.
