Description:

I am selling my 1993 C4 coupe (Grand Prix White; Cashmere Beige/Black). I bought this car in 2017 from a respected Rennlister with a lot of Porsche and motorsport experience. In 2017, a lot of work was done to get this car well sorted and upgraded to a 3.8L, both by the previous owner and then by me. This car handles great and with the upgrade, it just keeps pulling. The next owner will benefit from all the work and expense that we put into it and it should be carefree for many years and miles to come. I have more money into this than I'm asking. My expense is your gain.

When I was buying this in 2017, the owner had just completed a long laundry list of items to get it well sorted, including DME solid state relay, LED headlights, new brakes, new Carrera Cup front strut brace, repaired gauges, new AC compressor, new shift boot, Porsche classic radio with navigation/bluetooth handsfree, and several other items. I have many of these receipts. However, during the PPI, the leak down/compression tests showed that one cylinder was not performing well and a rebuild was eventually going to be needed. I decided to bite the bullet at that point and go all in with an engine rebuild and an upgrade to 3.8L. While we "were in there", we decided to do some other work (details below) to make this car bulletproof and provide years of headache free ownership.

For the work the previous owner did and to get up to speed with its history, I encourage you to read his thread for the Rennlist for sale ad:
https://rennlist.com/forums/vehicle-...anual-cpe.html

Then, when I took ownership, I did the following. The rebuild and 3.8 upgrade pieces were done by the previous owner. He is a Porsche factory trained expert with decades of motorsport engineering experience, and literally has written books about assembling Porsche engines (

https://www.amazon.com/Porsche-911-Engine-Assembly-Guide/dp/0557203899/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=cole+scrogham&qid=1572187538&sr=8-2 https://www.amazon.com/Porsche-911-Engine-Assembly-Guide/dp/0557203899/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=cole+scrogham&qid=1572187538&sr=8-2
).
I have all receipts - about $35k.
  • 3.8L upgrade - Mahle pistons and cylinders, camshaft, connecting rods, Steve Wong chip
  • Engine rebuild - valve job (Ollies Machine Shop, including new valve guides and springs, refaced heads), gaskets, seals, valve adjustment etc
  • Transmission rebuild - replaced worn syncros and differential bearings, new clutch disc
  • New transfer case locking cylinder
  • New brake booster/4 wheel drive accumulator
  • New brake pump pressure switch
  • New idle switch and booster pump relay
  • Suspension - Bilstein B6 and H&R springs
  • Fuchsfelge wheels (17") with Michelin Pilot Sport AS 3+ (205/50, 255/40)
  • G Pipe (fvd Brombacher), secondary muffler delete
I have most of the stock equipment from the upgrade (cylinders, camshaft, springs, chip, clutch disk: not the wheels).

All of this work was done in 2017/2018, when the car had about 134k miles. I have only driven it in good weather, and today it has 138k miles. The CarFax shows a 10k mile discrepancy - this was when the prior owner fixed all the gauges (I have $1,710 receipt from Palo Alto Speedometer). Importantly, all of the work I did has less than 5k miles on it (and the work from the previous owner has about 7k miles on it). CarFax also shows no accidents, just regular maintenance work.

As you can see in the pictures, in addition to being very mechanically sound, the car shows exceptionally well. The luster of the paint is amazing - it really pops. I receive many compliments. There are a couple small rock chips that you can only see within a few feet. And the inside is in great condition for a 26-year-old car. The seats show some expected wear but overall I would characterize as very good. The dash is excellent, no cracks. The upgraded Porsche Classic radio ($1,120) blends right in, and gives navigation and the Bluetooth wireless connectivity for your phone calls is excellent.

Why am I selling? Good question. I will regret this I'm sure at some point. I want to get back into a modern 911, and while I believe this 964 is bulletproof and I'd drive it across the country, I simply don't use it as a daily, and unfortunately I don't have room for both.

Please PM me with any questions. I will do my best to fully answer your questions. I'm happy to arrange a PPI at your cost. Thanks for looking.

- Dave

For those interested.... I was involved with trice9's purchase of this car a couple of years ago. This is a well known car, the previous owner is someone who is extremely well known nationally in air cooled Porsche circles. The car was exceptionally nice prior to the purchase. Then thousands more has been poured into the car to make it a subtle beast. The 3.8 upgrade really transforms the car. Beyond that, just about every area of the car has been addressed and often made better than 1993 standards. As I mentioned, I know the current owner personally and he is very fastidious with his vehicles. He's the kind of owner you actually want to buy a car from. if anyone has any question please feel free to contact me as well. I know a great deal about the car.

If you're looking for a later model 964 this is an excellent choice.

good of thing I just saw this ad, because I would have been on this.

you are right. After reading the history, you don’t want to be selling this.

Curious....how did the 3.8 compare to the 3.6? I'm assuming low end tq is the main noticeable benefit, right? Would you consider it worth the money over a simple reseal?

Out of curiosity. What were you asking for the sale price? Looking at a similar if not as well maintained example and looking at values. Much appreciated

correct, the increase in low end torque was noticeable. whether it was worth the $ or not is going to depend on each individual. but for me, yes, i was happy with the return i got for that investment. admittedly i wasn't so sure going into it, but after driving it with the upgrade i was glad i did it.
