Description:
Introduction
I bought this car from a dealer in Northern Virginia in June 2013. It had just been repainted Guards Red, but was otherwise unremarkable and stock. The only modification was a period-correct sound system that was quickly pulled. Over the summer of 2013, I performed a major restoration on the major systems of the car with the hopes of getting more time in HPDE. You will see in the list below that no expense was spared in the selection of parts towards making this the 'RS' that Porsche never built for the 944. Though the curse of being an automotive engineer meant that in the six years I've owned and worked on the car, I've never taken it to the track. My loss is your gain, and I hope this Turbo enjoys its next life out where it belongs. Since the restoration in '13, I would suspect I have not put more than 3000 miles on the car. The odometer was inoperable when I bought the car, so the exact mileage is unknown.
I have full documentation of every part replaced or modified on the car during my ownership. I also have service records whenever the car was taken to a trusted shop specializing in 944 or Porsche work. In the parts listed below, all were installed over the summer of 2013 unless otherwise noted.
The Good:
I went through a few suspension configurations before finally being happy with its current setup. Full coilover conversion means no messing with torsion bars for corner-balancing. The ride isn't brutal, but stiff enough for DE and the street. The current alignment is geared for street use. With all rubber addressed in the steering and suspension, there's no lack of driver confidence with this 30 year old car. It's doing what a 944 should do, but more focused.
Despite being a respray, the paint is in very good shape and gloss. I just finished a full polish and hand wax.
The interior was fully replaced in the spirit of a Porsche RS car.
The Opportunities:
After significant engine work, I have been experiencing exhaust smoke at idle that is starting to get annoying and smelly. After much troubleshooting, it appears to be oil through the new turbo or valve seals. Initially it was thought to be a rich fueling issue, but after tuning the fuel setup, that doesn't seem to be the reason anymore. Despite the smoke, the engine runs cool and has the power you would expect from the modifications I've made.
After replacing a leaking master cylinder last year, I am still experiencing a softer brake pedal than desired. All critical parts in the hydraulic circuit are new, so it may just need some additional bleeding to get the pedal feel as desired.
The A/C is functional, but requires a sacrifice of bottled refrigerant once a summer.
Why am I selling?
I have taken a career opportunity out west, and I'm ready for my next project. I've learned so much from this build, and went on to own and restore 2 other 944s on the side. I recognize I can never recoup the total cost of my time and parts in to this project, but I hope someone knowledgeable with the 951 can enjoy it for years to come. If you are interested in HPDE, you're saving yourself thousands in parts by picking up this car.
