Diesel versus S engine durability

Diesel is designed for long-term use. No spark plugs. The high-pressure fuel pump is the only major component that Is not covered on extended warranties so I guess watch out for that. One key is keeping the pump 'cool' so make sure to avoid having the fuel gauge dropping into the 1/8" (red) area.
On my V8 Touareg (Audi engine), had only two issues: intake motor flaps going bad three times and coil packs replaced on recall. Had over 90k on it. No turbo on that one. Was a great ride but a gas pig.
On my V6 TDI, 45k currently. Nothing other than 10k services and AdBlue pump replaced at 1100 miles under recall. Same engine as in the Cayenne diesel.
Cannot comment on the S engine.

Gasoline engine designed and developed by Porsche. Diesel engine borrowed from the mother ship.
Diesels are built with stronger walls to handle high pressures in general. But that is also true of newer Direct Injected gasoline engines.
Adblue components in diesel prone to failure simply because the major installed base of these is limited to low volume markets and they are not as evolved yet. But that is changing. Don't know how good or bad the adblue system in the macan is (probably as good as the one in the Mercedes), it is however an additional subsystem.
Major issue.. Diesel High Pressure fuel pumps. They do go bad. In worse case scenarios they burst into shards and take the engine with it. Do a search on VW TDI failures on the web and assess this for yourself.
Diesels have glow plugs.. Gasoline spark plugs. That's all I know.
Overall modern Diesel engines have more subsystems and more complexity. Draw your own conclusions on expected reliability.
