I wasn't going to stop in a dense fog to take a picture but when I got to the airport to pick a friend up, it registered -40F as shown. During the pea fog the CEL came on. I got home hooked up PIWIS and cleared the (frozen) data errors. I'm sure since the headlights are LEDs they don't heat up enough in their casing which perennially causes frost build-up inside the lens and no doubt comms errors (19002 is no communication with sensor). I don't have Sirius which is why it reports an SDARS error.
We're in now 3 weeks of below -35F weather and tonight is supposed to be the coldest with temps dipping below -50F. It will warm a little by Tuesday with snow then freeze up again. In 18 years I've been up here we've never had a spell like this. But the kids love it, they're out drifting and running laps...
Damn, I thought we had it rough in MN! Worst I’ve ever seen here is -34 below actual air temp. I have a pic of it from years ago when I had my F80 or 82, can’t remember.
VDub forbids engine block heaters due to fire danger and I've never seen a P winterized (but then again the 992 folks have long ago put their toys to bed). In my stable ALL vehicle work year round, I didn't spend that kind of cash to drive it 2 months a year.
AAMOF when I was working at NOAA's CDA one of the employees had his truck catch fire from a block heater and nearly burned the building down. Other than Olga, my turbo diesel skid steer, neither the 992 or Macan have battery/tranny or engine block heater. For the 992, I'm limited to -20F due to 5w-40 oil, Olga and the Macan (and the recently deceased V8 Touareg) are on Mobil1 0w-40 good to -50F. We are 20 miles or so from town with little to no traffic so the car does heat up and the battery due to it's location as noted above has a near 50 degree temperature differential with the outside air. It does take a LONG time however, for the heated steering wheel (one of the most important "check the box" items) and seat to heat up.
Olga (the turbo diesel) needs to be plugged in at least 4 hours prior by these temps and I may need an auxiliary kerosene heater to thaw the fuel filter to get her to start as she's outside. Concerned neighbors (as a courtesy I plow my street until the heavy machinery arrives) did suggest I move the 992 outside and put Olga in the heated garage...
My incoming 2021 Toyota LC200 will have to be winterized when it gets here (they already changed the oil for me from Toyota recommended 0w-20 to more common for deep winter 0w-40; this provides for better lubrication and easier starts than 0w-20).
Most stores have head bolts that allow you to plug your car in if it needs to (most cars have cords dangling from the front of the radiator) or more commonly (which doesn't help with the air quality) folks they just leave the car running while they run in to shop.
Been to Houston TX (there's a Houston AK btw) many times. The humidity is oppressive, the heat kills you, traffic is a nightmare but there are good restaurants ... we have none of those
