Default '18 S 3.0T, engine sounds like cards in spokes?

Before I start throwing money at the dealer, I thought I'd ask folks if this is known and/or normal.

Our '18S has about 30k miles on it. Has oil, oil pressure, etc. So far, no issues and it's been regularly maintained.

Over the past 6mos or so I've noticed a sound when you're at 2-3k rpm that sounds like when you put a card in your bike spokes. Sort of a fast "tapping". Loud enough you can hear it if you are driving next to a wall or fence. Audible when I hear the car coming up the road. Anyone experienced this? Any thoughts/tips/etc?

Thanks!

Have them check out the flapping valve in the exhaust pipe. That cost me $1,000 to cure. Same model, same year, same mileage.

Could be a heat shield working itself loose. Good project for the dealer or Indy at the next oil change.

Thanks all. We're going on a long road trip today. Hopefully it won't grenade

An odd thing. I have oil pressure, but I can't get the damn thing to show me the oil level. Just keeps saying "not available". Running or not. Hot or cold. WTF. What's the right way to do this?

After driving the car until the oil is fully warmed-up, park on a level surface, shut the engine off, and wait 15 minutes. Restart the engine, and check the oil level display.

Did you just change your oil? It takes a magic combination of re-starts and mileage to bring back the level indicator. Also, the cycle starts again if you re-open the hood, I think.

Thanks folks. Just got back from 400 miles, with some amazing mountain twisties (Blewett pass in Wa). Car did great. Reminded me of what a great road trip car it is.

Ran flawlessly. Good oil pressure, and zero strange noises. Had a few chances to really push it and it pulled strong and smooth.

i'm about 5k into my oil change. Probably going to DIY it again in the next couple weeks.

And, I finally got a reading out of the oil gauge and it's perfectly full. Strange. I've never had so many failed readings before. I think it was just random chance that I saw so many failures.

I'll keep an eye out for the noise. Mostly noticeable in sport mode cruising around town at 2-3kRPM. Odd.
