Default Front engine woes

Just got an estimate from an independent shop saying they need 12 hours to replace the water pump and dreaded timing cover leak. This would be while they have the engine out for a blown rear main seal. Seems like a lot of shop time for those items.
ps
the rear main seal blew out after they repaired the cooling crossover hose saying both lower PVC valves were destroyed by the leaking coolant.
Something seems rotten in the state of Denmark.
thoughts? Prayers?

My first thought is: what year and model do you have, and what is the back story of these problems?
