Default Adaptive cruise = engine braking downhill = brake light comes on

This is a cool feature I discovered at night the end of a long road trip.

Also, if you take your set cruise speed down in an increment of 5 or more, it turns on the brake light till you get down to the set speed.

So, without touching the brake or shifting down auto or manual, it is letting the following car know you have dropped speed.

I believe regulations require all vehicles to turn on brake lights if the car is decelerating at a certain rate, regardless of the reason. It's become particularly relevant with EVs and their one-pedal driving.

It is cool to see - definitely important for not being rear-ended!

makes sense, but I've had troubles finding this in "print" on the web anywhere... It would be nice to know the required specs that automakers adhere to for brake-light actuation...
