Default P05A0 code - CEL - failed shutters

Hi all,

My wife took the Macan S to work this morning and had a minor panic when she noticed the following:

I have a cheap code reader and it read it as a "P05A0" which is to do with a failure of the radiator shutters. And a quick check and yes, they are stuck open and they dont close when the car is turned off (after 20 seconds or so). It does look like they arent working correctly. Called my local dealer and they confirmed that this code is the failed shutters for some reason but its going to take a couple of weeks before I can get it booked in.

Anyone else had this issue? I am suspecting its not an issue, since its just going to allow air into the radiator anyway, and its hot here in NorCal anyway (98-100 for the next couple of weeks), so I guess the shutters wouldnt do much. But any feedback would be welcome.

Also, anyone know what might have caused this? Not looking to point blame or anything, but is this a failed servo? Sensor? Electrical issue? Anything worth checking? Its covered under warranty, but if I can save myself a trip to the dealer, I dont mind taking a closer look.

Oh and yes, dusty interior, needs a clean! However, the smoke from the Dixie fire blew into my area over the last couple of days and its covered everything!

Somewhere down the YouTube rabbit hole I stumbled across a car video (not a Macan) and the presenter mentioned the front shutter fail issue. Apparently this is a common issue on other vehicles as they get stuck from debris buildup such as dirt, bugs, rocks, etc. Could be an easy fix or might need some new hardware. Porsche probably recommends replacing the entire assembly but I just found the shutter and motor listed separately.
Edit: Thanks for the post! In fact, now that I think about it I noticed some leaf debris stuck in one of the top louvers a couple of months ago. Perhaps I should start cleaning those regularly.

There seems to be a weak point in the motor and the plastic gears get stripped. I had an issue as well. Some things to check:
1. Are the shutters open or closed?
2. Do you hear a whirring / grinding sound from the front of the car after stopping?

It's not a big deal as long as the shutters are open. However if it's failed and they are not opening at all, that could possibly cause the vehicle to overheat but you would get warning about that as well. In my case they were occasionally working but more often than not, they would be stuck opened and the motor would keep running for a minute or two trying to close them.

As far as checking out the motor goes, unfortunately access requires removal of the front bumper. So not something you can just check really quick. The motor is actually not very expensive, it's the labor to get it installed which is the killer in this case.

Well, its started working again!!!

Had to move the car and noticed that the CEL didnt come on so checked the shutters - hey presto, they closed when the engine was turned off. Was a little worried that it might stick shut now, but a few shorter trips and checked each time and they open on start-up and close on turning off the car. Complete with the normal whirring noises. Odd, but seems to be working correctly again and no idea why its some how managed to fix itself! I took a little look and nothing looked broken or stuck so I am guessing it was an electrical gremlin. I did check if I can get to any electrical connectors, but its all hidden and difficult to get to, might take a closer look later.

Anyone know if it fails open? I am guessing from the parts descriptions / pictures online, it looks like the default position is open and it has to force it closed. I think it uses pressure to do this.

There're at least a few times that my shutter stay open, the whole night, until next morning when I drive to work and park.
Sometimes turn the car on (not the engine) after a few hour will do the trick and have it close, but half of the time it won't.

But then again it never throw a code on me, so just another weird VAG quirk.

Noticed mine stayed open as well, yesterday. So I shut the garage door and went inside. I have so many other problems to deal with that I am going to put that on the last page of the worry list.

I just used thick zip tie around center post of lowest shutter to keep shutters open during summer months. I don’t want to take out entire front to just replace shutter motor and buy expensive OBD scanner to reprogram the shutter. In cold months, zip tie can be cut off, so you can keep shutters in closed position. CEL comes on once in awhile but I have Autel scanner that can erase codes as needed.

17 Macan
