Default Purchase advice on a '16 Macan S

Hey Macan owners. I've been checking the market for a Macan S. I saw one at a dealership near me and tomorrow I will be test driving it. It's a '16 Macan S with 43k Miles. It pretty much have all the options that I am looking for. So few questions tho. What are the most common problem of this generation of Macan, if there are any. Should I skip it and get newer model? What should I look for on a used Macan S. How reliable is it? Any input for this model will be much appreciated. Thank you.

I had a 2016 Macan S that i bought at 5k miles and kept til 43k miles (before trading for an '18 Macan Turbo). In that time I had a PDLS (headlight) unit replaced under warranty.

Otherwise it had the factory recommended services performed and had no other issues. It was my daily driver and did a round trip cross country tour from MD to Monterrey for Rennsport with no issues.

There is a thread here about a transfer case problem. It was not a problem for me. I have never seen any actual numbers about frequency for the year/model so don't know how general it is. But see: <https://rennlist.com/forums/porsche-macan/1173942-transfer-case-tsb-and-link-to-all-macan-tsbs.html>

16S with 140K

Very reliable car
4 issues to check prior to purchase
Timing chain cover
Transfer case
Passenger seat sensor - $2800 to fix unless part of the recall. My car was 42 cars after the recall so no help from Porsche.
Leaking belt tensioner - $1200 to fix

Get these all checked prior to purchase. If none go for it

Ask dealership to show you the repair and service history. Biggies are spark plugs at 30k and PDK service at 40k. Car at this mileage would likely have needed brake replacement all 'round. If all these major services aren't documented I'd pass on this car.

I recently picked up a 2015 Macan S with 55+k miles but got all the records which outside of the water in the tail lights of the early builds was fine. Prob due for a battery and another set of plugs at 60k but PDK fluid has been replaced, riding on four new tires that were replaced in the last 2k miles and brakes (pads and rotors) were done all around in January. Still as tight and quiet as new, pretty good for a VW!

You may want to research the battery replacement issue here and over at macanforum.com as they are not your average Costco replacement.

Thanks for the tip, still working on figuring this one out as I'd prefer to replace proactively.

Sir down before you do this. The cost will run close to a thousand bucks. It will entail a dealer because the installation requires registration with a PIWIS tester. No more pull it out in the parking lot and dropping in the replacement and wheeling the bad core back to the Costco tire department. You will read the reasons for this calamity as you research this.

Aside from one issue covered under warranty, wife and I have been problem free!

We have a 2017 Macan S with 20K on the clock.

The ONE thing we had was a minor leak that was covered under that original Warranty.

I would think you would be good to go for one. Get Svc records and see where they were done.

BTW want to sell your 981

Check for recalls. My 2016 was in for a new fuel pump, in the tank. And a software update, they say for more power. But I can't tell.

Or you could use the Autel MD808Pro to register a battery you got elsewhere.. even factoring in the cost of the scanner + battery it would be well under $1k

Again, this forum could use some ‘sticky’ threads to address these commonly reoccurring questions, as exists in other Rennlist forums.

Seems there’s been multiple questions in this forum related to potential first time Macan purchases just in the past couple days. Sticky threads such as “Read This First if You’re Considering a Macan Purchase” would be convenient for all involved.

Moderator....thoughts?
