Default Wastegate "pop" at shift?

I test drove a new Macan w/base engine and liked it...except for an irritating and cheap-sounding pop noise heard inside at each shift under power. Salesman said it was the waste gate. I've had a few turboed cars and never heard anything like it. Is it really normal?

I don't think so, it's the exhaust.

Many of the Porsche exhausts are designed such that they make some 'pop' or similar noise under power at the shift points. Those with PSE especially. The perceived 'quality' of the sound varies between the different models/engines (and is of course subjective from person to person as well).

Momentary fuel/spark cut during the shift is what causes the noise. Most modern dual clutch cars do this.

I wish Porsche had done something to muffle it...ugh. I had a dual clutch trans in a 2010 VW diesel but there was no change to engine sound at shifts.

No spark on the diesel.

I don't notice it in "normal", then again when I drive the GTS (wifes DD), I'm often in Sport and shifting with the paddles with PSE on - love the sound when on the throttle running through the gears.

It’s not a diesel....don’t think they could even muster a fart no matter how far up you run the engine before it shifts. Unless you are on it at every shift, think of it as an audible feedback that the engine is happy. If you are on it at every shift, get a 911.

I am rather fond of DCT farts myself. It adds some aural sensation to an otherwise less exciting automatic transmission driving experience... I am a manual guy but if it must be automatic, let it be DCT, and let it fart
